Question

Push Sync BlackBerry with Exchange 2007 without BES

Asked by: wvbeaner

My boss has restricted our company to Palm Treo Devices only because she thinks that these devices are the only thing that can sync via push technology with an exchange 2007 server without using one of the RIM BES servers.

Is this true?  I really kinda hate the Treo, big and clunky and buggy.
We use Verizon as our carrier.  I have heard something about Verizon's BIS service if we have POP3 enabled on our Exchange Server.  How does this work?  Will this enable the Push technology we are interested in?

I am the systems administrator, so would like to be able to present Blackberry alternatives if this is possible.

Thanks,

bis works with either pop3 or imap4.. the problem with bis is it will only do mail. it will not do any other features including the one saving grace for blackberry which is remote wipe of lost devices. an internet cable cell phone and exchange with active sync is your best bet.

The type of service you will have if you use an external server (like Verizon) will require an applet to be installed on each computer used by a Blackberry user.  It's sort of like using the old Blackberry Desktop Redirector, so I don't think you would want to do that.  Is there a particular reason that your boss doesn't like BES?  Or is there a problem with BES and Exchange 2007?  I have only used it with Exchange 2003 so far.

I think it is more of a thing with she knows nothing about it and therefore will not support it.  Actually I am the one that really supports it and I would love to learn it, but she controls the budget.  She knows Treo, and Windows Mobile. I was looking for an alternative for myself, and then maybe others in my company after it is tested out.

If she will let you, you can get the Blackberry Enterprise Manager for a single user for free - I can't remember what exactly they call it, maybe "Blackberry Express."  Anyway, it's the regular BES but it's free and comes with a single-user license; you just have to have a Blackberry device first because they ask for your serial number in order to validate the license when you order it.  Additional users are $99 each.  So, if she'll agree, it would be a good way to learn a little bit about it and get her on board with it also.  We have clients that use both, so their users get to choose which they prefer - Blackberry or Windows Mobile.

From what I have seen, the Palm Treos are a little behind the times. You just need a Windows Mobile device, and there are loads of them around.
The Blackberry solution without a BES I think is very poor. While you can connect to the server with POP3/IMAP, part of the joy of Blackberry with BES is the full sync capabilities and how everything is live, Calendar, contacts etc, plus the ability for the device to access internal resources without opening ports.

Depending on how many devices you are going to buy, you may not have to purchase BES. Here in the UK I have never paid for BES. I just tell the supplier that we are having 20 devices and I want BES and CALs free or I will go somewhere else.

Simon.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I am thinking about giving Hypercat's single user solution a try to learn about it, then I will definatley keep Sembee's idea of getting the software for free in mind if I can convince some people around here.

Thanks all.
