Question

Unable to get Blackberry activated with BES 4.1.....

Asked by: PrOwLeR84

I have installed BES 4.1 onto my SBS2003 Server and am attempting to get users phones synced with BES, but when they type in their email address and the activation password it just hangs at the activating screen.

I know there is a connection being made because on the BES manager, it shows that there was a connection made, just failed to activate.

Could an issue be that i am inputing the server name wrong, when you input your email and activation password there is another field for server name.  This is something else i am not sure about:

This is how i put it,     SERVER.MYDOMAIN.COM  is this right or did i not set up correctly.  I cannot find a walk through for this portion of setting up users.

A little back history, or Domain Controlelr that hosted BES Previously has crashed, this is a fresh install on a new machine.  Would this have a factor in users not being able to activate on BES?

have you tried deleting the users BES account and recreating it? also have you wiped the handheld (if it isnt new)?

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-20 at 06:03:08ID: 23420006

once you wipe the handheld and recreate the account it shouldnt ask you for the server name

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 06:05:24ID: 23420021

I did try to delete the account and recreate and it still gets stuck on activating.

Will any data on the handheld be lost, doing this to each blackberry will prove to be costly if that is the case.  (Data being lost that is)

Did you changed the exchange rights for the BES account?
Did you restored the license information?

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 06:12:05ID: 23420073

I did restore the License information
and as far as the rights for the BES account
Meaning the users i am trying to add, or the user that BES was installed under?

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-20 at 06:31:00ID: 23420257

the users actuall account. just delete it from the server and recreate it. then try to reactivate the account.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 06:36:32ID: 23420331

I am sorry if i am asking the same question again, I just want to make sure i understand.  You are saying to try and remove the users account from BES or from SBS?  If you are asking to remove the user from BES i already tried that and it didn't work.

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-20 at 06:38:59ID: 23420357

ok sorry i was talking about the BES. has the handheld been wiped? and also have you verified with the BB provider that the data plan is activated?

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 06:43:11ID: 23420406

Will any data on the handheld be lost when you wipe the handheld.  does this just remove certificate info, or all data on the Blackberry?

Yes the user does have the data plan active.

That looks like an activation email.  Normally you see those when the user tries to do an enterprise activation,  but the BES picks it up quickly and processes it.  If the email is just sitting in the person's inbox, something is wrong along the line.

It might be a permissions issue.  If the BES account can't read the person's mailbox, it can't pick up the activation message.

It could be a number of things, but the process is working as it should up until the point where the BES is supposed to pick up that email.

Either the BES isn't looking at his mailbox, or there is a permission issue.

Let me know what you think..

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 07:31:41ID: 23420914

I will take a look at permissions once again.  I know that when i created the account via the attached guide, I added the send as permission to it for all users.  I thought this should take care if that, but maybe not.  I will look into this further and get back with any other pertinent information that could assist us in coming up with a solution.  Thanks for the help so far, I will reply as soon as i can.

The Server 2003 is in the 3rd section.

Thanks again for your help.

by: jderaPosted on 2009-01-20 at 10:05:41ID: 23422558

Always look to permissions being the issue on something like what you are experiencing.

Also did you install BES with a Domain Admin account or the BES Admin account?

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 10:08:33ID: 23422579

I created a seperate account to administer BES.

by: jderaPosted on 2009-01-20 at 10:09:15ID: 23422582

Also another trick to try to determine where the issue lies as this could also be a port issue on the firewall.  Try to activate the bb device using the usb cable and see if it goes thru.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 10:11:54ID: 23422612

I am actually trying that right now, and get the same hang when i try to activate it.  I created an activation password and entered it at the password prompt.  Still no luck though.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 10:13:29ID: 23422626

i do get BES to recognize the device, and i almost want to wipe the file system, but i cannot afford to lose any data that might be on the users Blackberry.

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-20 at 10:39:55ID: 23422898

back it up to there pc and wipe it clean. that is probably the last resort i would try, its as if the device doesnt have the security policy loaded. have you tried to resend the service book and the it policy then reload the user? take the battery out of the blackberry and put it back in to force it to sync? thats what we always have to do after deleted the account off the BES server.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 10:41:51ID: 23422915

I will try, I am currently stuck with the user in deleted mode, I am going to clear that issue and then i will attempt one more time.  Again thanks for all your help, be back soon.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 10:49:40ID: 23422981

Ok here is the latest and greatest.

I have readded the user, He is going to back up the data he needs to his PC, and then we are going to wipe the device and hopefully then we will be able to get the device to sync.  Cross your fingers, i know mine are.  I will respond with the findings in a while.

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-20 at 11:08:03ID: 23423124

sounds good, im crossing my fingers as well. after you wipe it, go ahead and resend the enterprise activation to the device it will then refresh the IT policy and the service book.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 12:01:29ID: 23423616

I am not sure whatelse to do.  It didn't work.  I don't want to fresh install either.  At this point i am lost on ideas.  Going to try a hard reset, by removing the battery.

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-20 at 12:33:31ID: 23423998

hey, i just talked to a few of the windows guys here, and they said that the user will need to close there outlook while you try to activate it, that will process the message the right way. it shouldnt get stuck in the inbox is should get deleted automatically. try a hard reset on the BB before resending the activation. and make sure the user has there outlook closed.

let me know if that helps.

Outlook has not been running.........................Anything else.

by: jderaPosted on 2009-01-20 at 14:11:00ID: 23424879

Yes, can you verify that your license for this new BES is working correctly? You may have to get your carrier/RIM in this one, but I have seen this exact problem and it was a licensing issue.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-20 at 15:13:17ID: 23425404

Thanks for the help, that was going to be my next attempt in the morning.  Thanks for the help guys hopefully i can get this resolved sometime tomorrow.  I do not want to close this out just yet.  I will be back on tomorrow around 7am CST.  Again thanks for the help.

by: jderaPosted on 2009-01-20 at 15:44:47ID: 23425598

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-20 at 17:20:54ID: 23426084

yeah deffinetly let us know how it goes. im sorry i wasted so much of your time, but generally thats what we have to do here where i work so i just figured id give some suggestions.

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-20 at 17:21:23ID: 23426088

and thank you prowler for giving even more insight on this.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-21 at 06:22:06ID: 23429778

ITMuscle, no time was wasted.  It was all a learning experience.  Will advise soon.

by: PrOwLeR84Posted on 2009-01-21 at 13:13:30ID: 23434068

Ok fellas, here is the final verdict.  Like you had both mentioned prior to verify security permissions, wipe the device, bam all was done correctly.  The only thing i did wrong was install under a different account.  I assumed that by this question from jdrea - "Also did you install BES with a Domain Admin account or the BES Admin account?" he had asked if i had installed with a domain admin account or the BES account.  The answer should have been i installed with the domain account.  that was my problem.  I was instructed by RIM to export the registry entries for Blackberry Manager and then import them into the current user registry entry on the BES account i had set up.  that was all that needed to be done.

Again thanks for the help to both of you.  I am sorry that it was something so little/big that caused the issue.  Again i cannot thank ya'll enough for taking the time to investigate and research possible fixes.

I went through the process so i assumed they would get automatically after i assigned them with the accept solutin and assign points.  This is my first time going through a thread i started/

by: ITMusclePosted on 2009-01-22 at 05:21:47ID: 23439016

oh ok cool, i clicked the little exclamation mark and it says i get 400 points all together because i put in so many suggestions. and jdera gets 100. thanks again bud and im sorry that we couldnt get there faster. have a good one.
