I want to synchronize my Blackberry Curve 8330 with Outlook using a new Belkin USB bluetooth adapter. I am running Blackberry Desktop Manager 4.2.2.14, Outlook 2000 and Windows XP SP3. (Desktop Manager 4.3 and above don't work with Outlook 2000.) I have been able for several months now to synch using the wired USB connection, so that much is already working.
I made the mistake of installing the Belkin USB bluetooth adapter from the CD that came with it before I read the posts carefully. The CD installed Widcomm software and a Broadcom driver for the bluetooth. Then I read the posts and learned that Blackberry Desktop Manager won't work with the Widcomm software, so I uninstalled it. According to the posts, I had to use the Windows generic bluetooth driver and just let Windows install it. So that's what I tried to do.
Without the Broadcom driver that came with the Belkin CD, Windows was unable to install the Belkin USB bluetooth adapter. So I thought maybe I needed the driver from the CD, even without the rest of the (Widcomm) software. In that way I was able to get the Windows Device Manager to see the bluetooth, but there was no bluetooth icon in the system tray, no bluetooth in the Control Panel and bluetooth connectivity is still grayed out in Blackberry Desktop Manager.
According to the posts, I needed to paste a reference to my specific bluetooth adapter into a Windows .inf file (%windir%\inf\bth.inf). I did that, exactly as instructed, trying a couple of different variations. None worked. The specific information I pasted into that file included USB\VID_050D&PID_0131, which identified the specific Belkin USB bluetooth adapter I had purchased. I leaned later that was not one of the adapters listed on the Microsoft support site as one supported by Windows, but the .inf file modification was supposed to fix that problem.
I think the problem might be that I need to somehow force the Windows generic bluetooth driver to install my bluetooth adapter, but I can't make that happen. Without the Broadcom driver, Windows simply won't deal with the bluetooth adapter. Maybe I screwed something up that I can't get rid of by installing the Widcomm software that came on the Belkin CD, even though I later removed it.
Please suggest something I haven't already done to get Windows and Blackberry Desktop Manager to work with my Belkin USB bluetooth adapter and sync with Outlook 2000.
