Question

Blackberry Desktop Manager cannot log into Domino server

Asked by: donvfp

We have a computer with Lotus Notes 8 and Blackberry Desktop Manager.
When opening BDM I get an error "Your notes account is not configured on the selected Blackberry enterprise server. Would you like to choose another server?"
I have done everything I can try to connect this software to the Domino server.
If I say yes, it gives me the option of choosing a different user, server and Lotus.ini file.
I have tried changing all of them individually with the same result.

The thing is, there are several users with this setup on their computers and only one or two of them are experiencing this issue.

Computers have Lotus Notes 8 and WinXP Pro.
Server has Domino Server 8 and Server 2003

I forgot to mention that the contacts do sync when the blackberry is connected through usb, but not the email because it can't connect to the server.

Make sure that the notes installation on the workstation can get direct access to the Blackberry server, not using passthru via another server.
To test this go File..Prefernces..User Preferences..Ports..Trace
See what route is taken to get to the server.
Make sure the lcoal address book has all the correct connection records to access the server.
Connect to the mail database using the local lotus Notes to ensure account has server access rights.

also check that the Notes client mail is working and the Domino server is accessible via FQDN, and not IP.

ALso check the Location doc, and make sure the server and mail settings are OK

A good check is to open up a mail and try to forward it. If it fails the Location doc settings are incorrect.

I hope this helps !

doninja - The domino server is the only server in our network.
SysExpert - I'm sure that they are able to forward emails or I would have heard about it.

Lotus Notes works fine on the computers. Domino server is accessible.
One thing that may come into play is that the users affected by this issue are the newer employees.

Were their computers repurposed from previous users ?

You may need to uninstall and reinstall the BDM to have it connect to the correct user profile/ location doc

lastly try using a different Windows User profile to test with.

Reinstall as needed.

I hope this helps !

Was BDM installed AFTER Lotus Notes ?

Are the computers cloned ?

by: brwwigginsPosted on 2009-07-29 at 10:16:47ID: 24972349

two things I would check..

(1) Make sure the notes clients are configured to work off server and not a local replica

(2) Make sure a state database exists on the BES server for these users.

In my experience I have found that, for some stupid reason, my name is substituted for the server name.  After your Blackberry Desktop Manager opens (not logged in) go to the Options menu (top right) and select Lotus Notes options.  Note the Blackberry server name that is listed. It should be a cannonical name such as CN=Mail/OU=SVR/O=Davalen. If not then you've found the problem. Enter the valid name of your server.  I find that this setting is not as 'sticky' as it should be and have not researched farther.   You will need to exit the Blackberry Desktop Manager (not the Device Manger) and then relaunch it to log into your server.  You may receive an error about the state database but that is a different problem.

SysExpert - BDM was installed after Lotus Notes and the computers are not cloned.

geedavid - I will try that process when I have access to their computers on Monday.

I was able to check on this issue again yesterday.
On the problem computer, I noticed that when logging in and in the options, the server comes up as SERVER\DOMAIN. I changed it to CN=SERVER/O=DOMAIN, which was the other option in the dropdown list. And I checked on all the other computers with BDM, they have it entered as CN=SERVER/O=DOMAIN and it is working for them.
I tried updating BDM to 4.7 and I still get the same error.
My next course of action is to reinstall Lotus Notes on that computer. But I have a feeling that will not fix it. It seems to be an issue with the Domino server.

Compare the notes.ini files from a working and non-working ( use FC to do a file compare of the text or any other goot test file compare tool )

Also check what is showing up in the Location Document for the 2 users. Especially server names !

I hope this helps !

I figured out that BDM was pointing to the notes.ini file in the wrong directory.
