Can you select to download the messages using IMAP instead of POP3 in the Blackberry?

Browse All TopicsHello,
We have an MDaemon server, and our users generally download their mail via POP3.
One user has a blackberry (BIS), so we set his Outlook to leave a copy of messages on the server for 10 days. We can also access his mailbox via the World Client (webmail app) built into MDameon.
One more piece of info, when a message is first recieved into Worldclient it's icon is a closed yellow envelope. When it is downloaded with Outlook, it changes to a closed grey envelope.
Here is the problem:
When Outlook is turned on and downloading mail every 1 minute, all mail goes to Outlook, Blackberry does not get any mail. When the state of the messages changes from the yellow icon to the grey one, I'm thinking that Blackberry is not interpreting this as a new message.
Even more odd, when Outlook is off, the Blackberry downloads mail, and deletes messages off of the server. If I watch the MDaemon logging, I can see the BIS servers connect to our server, check for new mail, and then it issues DELE commands, all before the connection with BIS is closed. I have included a portion of the logs in the Code window below. Also, interesting, Blackberry checked this account 10 times since this message was received before issuing the DELE statement.
One last piece, in the example below it leaves 3 messages. These 3 were downloaded by Outlook, Blackberry never touches those.
Blackberry and AT&T both say this isn't possible, yet I see it in the log. Is MDaemon mis-interpretting something from Blackberry and deleting messages? The blackberry config does not have any settings to "leave message on server" for POP3.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Thanks for both of your responses, IMAP isn't an option for us for a couple of reasons.
I got to the bottom of the problem, though still can't explain it. The user had an older blackberry, damaged it, and got it replaced. When AT&T replaced his phone, they setup a new Blackberry account, but his old one was still hitting the server.
I did not have access to the old Blackberry account, so we changed his password on the server, and that prevented the old account from getting in. Since we stopped that, there haven't been any problems.
Re-reading this in the light of your findings, is there a possibility that the old Blackberry was actually being used by someone? Yes it was damaged but if the company it was given back to chucked it in the bin and someone found it and started using it, would that explain it? Ok they wouldn't have an account, but it's possible an administrative error enabled it to be kept working. What happened to the old SIM card? Reason you need to know the answer there is you might (still) be paying for bandwidth used by this user.
Thank you for the points.

I believe that the Blackberry is automatically configured to "leave messages on server" because just the headers are being sent to it. It is only if you go to actually read a message on the Blackberry does the message actually get downloaded - that is my thought, I haven't gone through the logs. On deleting a message on the Blackberry I get a dialog which asks whether I want it deleted from the Server as well.
Using POP with Blackberry (and for that matter using mdaemon's POP in conjunction with Worldclient) is not ideal. I would suggest moving across to IMAP and forbidding POP access to mailboxes. If however you are using a non-Pro version of Mdaemon (which doesn't allow IMAP) my recommendation would be to "push" the messages to the Blackberry by using the Account forwarding option of Mdaemon (with the option to send to the original user as well, of course) to send the messages to the Blackberry email account which you get when signing up to BIS.
I don't understand why BIS is deleting - unless the user is deleting it on their Blackberry and answering "yes" to deleting it from the server. I checked 67.223.70.183 and this is a Blackberry IP address.
