Using Palm 700wx and SBS2003 Sync

I'm having an issue getting my Palm 700wx to sync wirelessly with my SBS2003. Prior to purchasing this phone, I had a Palm 650 that didn't use SSL certificates and everything worked fine.  After updating my server to the required SP and exporting the self signed certificates into my new PALM 700wx, here's the issue I have.

My local SBS is called exchserver.name.local and when I need to access the server from outside the lan, I have to use an ip address XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. (see what I'm getting at?)

Of course I run into a certicate issue where the name of the site is not the same name on the certificate (therefore there's a warning and the phone will not sync). Inside the LAN everything works great because I can just key in the server name in the Active Sync setup and voila. However outside the lan, exchserver.name.local is not a fully qualified domain name so it doesn't work. If I enter the IP of my server in active sync, the names don't match.

Changing the domain name of the server to something like businessname.com seems like a lot of work and I don't want to take this route.

Things that I'm currently looking into are as follow:

Can exchserver.name.local be registered as a FQDN?
Are there certificates that work with IP addresses and WM5?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated?
