Question

I can't do a hot sync - I think it's because I used to use Lotus easy sync

Asked by: FionaMAmb

I used to sync my Palm III with Lotus Notes using Lotus easy sync.

I then changed jobs and my PC and no longer can get my Palm to sync with the desktop.  The handheld is fine as long as the batteries last, but every time I try a hot sync all I get is a string of odd characters in one record on my desktop.

What can I do?  How can I secure the data on the Palm?  Will I ever be able to sync again?

This free software might help, but would need more information about the problem to be sure. Note however, that one reviewer of the software said: " give it a poor rating because this utility did not solve my problem. I was previously using EasySync. After running this utility, I still could not hotsync with Palm Desktop. I found a utility Z'Catalog that allowed me to manually delete all of the databases on the handheld that started with the name "sync". Problem solved. "

Hi this sometimes can be a problem with the data on the handheld however you said that you used easy sync before so im going to assume you are not using it anymore. Easy Sync installs 4 files on the handheld, im not usre why but I do know that these 4 files do cause problems when the user no longer uses easy sync to transfer its data to and from the unit.

To be certain this is not a PC or palm desktop issue you will to setup a new username on the palm desktop, if you are syncing to any other applciation i would reccommend unistalling the conduit program you are using. Example Easy Sync for Lotus Notes = Easy sync is the conduit program or Pocket Mirror for Outlook.

ok once the new username has been created on the palm desktop you will need to remove the old username on the handheld. Now i know you said you have a palm and the link below is for a handspring device but the steps are all the same.

http://support.handspring.com/esupport/forms/hsResolutionView.jsp?ResolutionId=6575&ResType=RESEARCH

Now once the username has been removed you have to remove the easy sync files from the device, problem is that the files are hidden. You will need a file viewer such as FileZ  to find them.

Free download http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?prodID=9992

Now before you hotsync the applcation to the handheld play it safe and turn off all data conduits. When you sync remember to select the new username. To turn off all data conduits open the hotsync manager, click on custom, and double click on each data conduit ie. address, todo, memo, datebook and choose DO NOTHING. DO NOT SET AS DEFAULT.

Ok so FileZ is installed. Open FileZ and search for 4 files. They should be named
AddressSyncDB
DatebookSyncDB
ToDoSyncDB
MemoSyncDB

Delete all 4 files if found. DO NOT DELETE addressDB or datebookDB. Thats you data

Ok go back on your computer and open the hotsync manager this time change the data conduits to Handheld Overwrites Desktop. Please do not change the system conduit leave it on the default setting.
