How can I get two Netgear mr814 Cable/Dsl wireless routers to work together?

I don't know how access points work but basically I believe I'd like to use one of my Netgear Wireless routers like normal and use the other one as an access point.  Currently I have a network of 2 wired computers and 2 laptops that use wireless.  I have a Netgear mr814 connected to a cable modem, and all 4 computers can share drives and printers and surf the net with the netgear router as a default gateway for internet access.  My friend just gave me another wireless router for free.  Same exact model (Netgear mr814) and I'd like to use it to extend the range of my wireless network to cover my whole house and my backyard.  I understand the wired part of the network because it's basically just connecting two switches together with a crossover cable.   What I don't understand is if both routers have the same SSID and encryption, will I have a conflict if I'm using a laptop in a part of the house where it can receive a signal from both routers?  Is it even possible to do this?  Or do I have to configure one of them differently?  How do I set this up so that I can walk around my property with a laptop and have the laptop automatically know and switch to the router with the strongest signal?
