Question

Bluetooth Software License Expired? Dongle no longer has software

Asked by: viperware

I bought a Tecom usb bluetooth dongle for my pc around march of this year and have been using it with no problems to connect to my phone, a nokia 3650. Now all of a sudden when I try to make the same serial connection I have always been making, it says my bluetooth software license has expired and is now asking me for a license key. Why did they put a timer on the BT stack software? This is crazy! Now my dongle is useless because I have no means of getting a serial key, the tecom website is useless as well as the other crummy bluetooth websites. I have tried installing other verions of the stack software I found on the net, but they either also ask for a license key or are so buggy they cannot hold a serial connection for more than a few seconds. The software CD that came with my dongle has version 1.2.2.4 of the Widcomm BT stack software. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with the CD and it gives me the same message. What can I do to get my bluetooth dongle working again short of setting the year on my machine back to 2002? Thanks in advance.

Setting the year back won't help you. A clean reinstall of your OS is a solution. This will erase the registry key(s) that the software marked the expiration.
I've searched for cracked versions but there's none, anyway...it would have been against Experts-Exchange rules to provide you a link to cracked software.
So, the solution is to reinstall, but after the trial period will expire, you'll have to reinstall again. Or you can clone the partition after everything installed ok and when the trial expires rebuilt from image (can use Norton Ghost or PowerQuest Drive Image for cloning). Anyway....what I told you is probably on the line for breaking EE rules.

I went to the Tecom site.  I found this in the FAQ:

Q: What should I do when I saw the following messages. [The Widcomm Bluetooth Software feature you are trying to use has expired.] [Enter your name, company, and WIDCOMM Bluetooth for Windows licence key code in the fields below.]

A:  Please install the latest driver. The latest driver please download via http://www.tecomproduct.com/asp/support.asp?Navi=SoftwareDownload

Does this not answer your question?  This took me 15 seconds to find.

If this does not answer your question, then tell me the model number of your dongle and I'll look at the FAQ for that product.

I spoke with a rep from Tecom and he gave me the same advice. I went to the ftp site listed, which is the same FTP the rep gave me, and downloaded the driver. The driver on the website however, seems as if it is older than the version that came packed with the dongle. I had 1.2.2.4 this is 1.2.2.16. It installed just fine, but I am encountering the same dropped connection errors as with the newest 1.3.2.7 driver. I suppose there is no real solution for this until Tecom updates the driver on their ftp. I just wish the driver software that worked fine before could work again. but without the key I believe I am SOL. Thanks for the help guys, it is much appreciated.

Sorry for the delay, there were so many possible solutions to try... but after having contact with some Tecom reps, they sent me a new license.dat file to copy into the installation directory of my original software. Since the only problem I had with the original software was expiration, it seems the problem has been solved. However, it was not an easy task acquiring this file, so anyone else in this same situation would have equal difficulty and frustration. None of the new software I tried worked as well as the bundle that was packed with the dongle. The Tecom website is of little help to those looking for it, but the support staff is very helpful and friendly. It seems they wanted to make my dongle work again more badly than I did. I liked that. I gave the points to homeboy above because his answer was the closest. I would have split it up amongst everyone but I could not figure out how to do that. Thanks again for the help Experts! Much Obliged!

this entire thread is noncenseical!  well, i don't see a clear solution here.  ive tried downloading serveral packages that say they are Version 1.3.2.7 but they all fail in different ways, from not installing or being an invalid archive to just bad functionality.  i understand  the dongles are supposed to be common, but i don't think they are.  perhaps its just that i have not found the right dongle yet.

if you go to    http://66.45.42.85/tecom/    and enter the details asked for in blue they will e-mail you a security key (which i presume is the same as the licence key as they are both 32 chars) I'm trying to get my BT3030 to work on my laptop running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, anyone got any ideas, supplied software not licenced for OS

I recently had a dell laptop's bluetooth expire.  All I had to do to fix it was open up device manager and have it look for updated drivers.  After a reboot and a couple more installs everything was peachy again.
