Question

Add a new Blackberry user/device on BES 4.1

Asked by: Pro4ia

Hello,

I'll be implementing a BES 4.1.  Question I have is, what is the best way to add a new user / device?
My client has remote users also who may not be able to come in to add their device to the BES server.  Is there a way to add users remotely without requiring the user to come into the office?

Thanks,
john

Yes From the BES console, after you create the user, go to Properties of the user, set the enterprise activation password.  Give the remote user his primary smtp email address (tom.jones@somecompany.com) and the activation password.

the user can then go into his blackberry's Option and choose Enterprise Activate, provide the email address and activation password.  roughly 15 minutes to an hour afterwards (depending on the amount of data that has to go across), he is activated.

just make sure that the blackberry device is functional on the wireless service provider network.  you may have to work with the wireless provider on this.

Regards,

As ECNSSMT mentioned the wireless activation is the best method.  When you click on a user added to the BES you have a properties windows displayed below, in this area you have a menu called "Service Access" where you will find "Set Activation Password".  By default the password will expire within 48 hours so make sure your client extends this time if 48 hours isn't enough.

Before activating user’s wirelessly just make sure the end user has GPRS written in capitals on the device.  Also ensure that the BES codes have been applied to their SIM.  If a user has been using BlackBerry via the internet service and they are changing over to BES you need to ensure they have BES codes applied to their SIM as the BIS codes won't allow them to be activated on a BES.  If any users have been on BIS it's best to go into OPTIONS > SETTINGS > SECURITY and click the track wheel and select "Wipe Handheld" before activating.

Another small item is to make sure the end users change their "Date & Time" settings as it will default to Casablanca time zone by default and the time stamps on items will be incorrect if it isn't changed.

does it matter which wireless provider the users are using? no, right?
How do I associate the device with the corresponding user?
only information I need is their PIN?

It doesn't matter what service provider you use, all you need to ensure is that they have BES codes activated on their account.

Within the BES you just need to add the users and a activation password.  What the user does then is go into "Enterprise Acivation" on the device and enter their email address and the password that you have set and this will activate them onto the BES.  In the initail part of the activation the PIN is sent to the BES and you will see it appear beside the username on the server..

So how does the BES know what device belongs to what user if I don't need the PIN initially to set the user up?
In another words, how does the device know to activate with MY BES when they enter in the email & pw?

Activations for new users are very straight forward as the Enterprise Activation icon/option is on the main screen.  If you have user that has been using their BlackBerry on a BIS account it is best to sync the device via desktop manager device to ensure they have all the latest calendar appointments and contacts transferred to the desktop.  Once you are sure all their data is up to date you should do a "Handheld Wipe" and then do the enterprise activation.

Also if a user who was previously using BIS wont activate wirelessly make sure you check they have the BES codes on their account.  If they do have BES codes and it still won't activate ring you BlackBerry support number on ask them to clear your IMSI number of the RIM relay.  What happens is your phone IMEI and SIM number create an IMSI number which identifies your device on the RIM backend, when changing from BIS to BES there may be delays in your on IMSI being flushed and it will point your device to the BIS service instead of BES.  In this event you can trick the system by putting a different BES activated SIM in the device as this will create a new IMSI number and you can activate them onto your server.

*******So how does the BES know what device belongs to what user if I don't need the PIN initially to set the user up?
*******In another words, how does the device know to activate with MY BES when they enter in the email & pw?

Your BES server has a permenant connect to *.*.blackberry.net and your server has a unique SRP ID.  The users that you add onto your BES are then know at blackberry.net and are assigned to you SRP ID.  When you activate your devices it knows your email address and it also knows your server is where those accounts live so it passes that activation request to your server, so if the password you assigned makes that one of the activation request it will activate that user onto the BES.  Also during this activation process your device PIN is also assigned to your email address and server.

Very good information.

So as a summary,
-on the server side, all I have to do is add the user from BES manager, goto Properties and set an Enterprise Activation username & pw.
-from the users side, they'll have to goto Ent. Activation and enter in the username & pw I set for them.
correct?

This should go pretty smooth unless there are device issues as mentioned above which I'm hoping I won't be faced with.

I will be implementing this next week.

Thanks again.

Under username properties - Service Access" where you will find "Set Activation Password".  You only need to set a password as when you add the username it pick up the users password from Active Directory.

-from the users side, they'll have to goto Ent. Activation and enter in the username & pw I set for them. correct?
That is correct.

Once you have added a user always do somes testing. e.g. add conact and calendar entry from desktop and make sure it syncs to the device, then from the device change that conact and calendar entry and make sure it applies the chnages back to the desktop.
