Blackberry Wirless Email Reconciliation - Messages read in Outlook are not being marked as read on the handheld

We're using BES 3.6.7 with Exchange 2003/Outlook 2003/BB Desktop 4.x. I have a Blackberry user who claims that items marked as read in Outlook are not being marked as read on his handheld. It may be that there's too long of a delay between when this user's device wirelessly reconciles the read/unread flag. What I don't know is how to increase the time between reconciliation... if that's the problem. Doesn't seem to be an option on the server... so, I'm assuming it must be on the device. Anyone have any pearls of wisdom?

everything is either instantaneous or 15 minutes; which every comes first (so much for the pearls of wisdom huh)

I am kinda curious if the user has Outlook 2003 in cache mode.  If so take it out, it does some funky things with synchronization between itself and Exchange.  

In Outlook, go under Tools > (Options) > Account setup > choose the account if you have to > Change

and right under the textbox for the Exchange Server, uncheck the Cache checkbox....

I think that reconciliation time is set at 15 minutes and can't be changed...

When you have Outlook in cached mode all you need to do is hit "send and receive" after reading, deleting or moving emails.  Once you have done a ""send and receive" go into messages and press the track wheel and select "reconcile now".  This will may the read, deleted or moved files update on the device instantly.

Issues that can arise:

1. If you delete an email from Outlook you need to leave it in the recycle bin otherwise the BES will loose track of the email and it won't be deleted from the device.

2. If you want emails that are deleted on the device to be deleted from Outlook you need to go into "messages" on the devices, then select "Options" and "Email Reconciliation".  In this area ensure "delete on: Mailbox & handheld" is selected.

3. Read emails in Outlook don't seem to update on the device.  Ensure on the device "Wireless Reconciliation is On", also remember a delay of up to 20 minutes may occur.  You have to consider Outlook only does and send and receive in cached mode every 5 minutes (this also updates read, deleted & moved items), then the device will only do reconciliations every 15 minutes.  To speed this process up just hit "Send & Receive" and then "Reconcile Now" on the device.

I'm still not sure what this user did to create the issue... sounds to me like he messed with a lot of settings he didn't fully understand, after having some simple contact synch issues...  but I've resolved all the issues by doing the following:

1. Recreated his Outlook profile with Cached Exchange mode off (did not fix the issue)
2. Followed Blackberry's online instructions for wiping all data from the handheld
3. Removed second address book from this user's Outlook profile (creating odd, duplicated entries)
4. Reset Desktop Manager to use new Outlook profile
5. Sync'd Blackberry via USB and tested - all is now well - emails are wirelessly being marked as read and unread, appropriately

I've left Outlook's cached Exchange Mode off, for the time being, since this particular user notices every little thing that doesn't synch and then requires an answer for why it's happening. However, I have cached mode on for all other Blackberry users in the office and have not had any issues.

I will note that the user that was having issues, has Categories enabled on his Outlook contacts, as well as a third party app called "Lookout", used for indexing and searching for emails. Can't say for sure if any of that created issues... but, for now, everything is working correctly.
