Question

Blackberry 8830 and Desktop Redirector, I keep getting etp.dat in my inbox

Asked by: djohnson104

Blackberry 8830 and Destop Redirector, I keep getting etp.dat in my inbox. I know what they are and what they are for. My problem is why are they not being processed? I only use the Desktop Redirector. I have seen this issue on EE but i was when using a server, I only have the Desktop Redirector.

Is it possible to Sync tasks with out the USB or Server?

a possible solution from:
http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com/4410-bb_solution_receiving_network_etp_messages.html

First, remove the Desktop Service Books from the device.
1. From the Home screen on the device, go to Options > Service Book.
2. In the Service Book list, highlight the Desktop [CMIME] service book.
3. Click the trackwheel and select Delete from the menu.
4. If a Desktop [CICAL] service book is listed, repeat steps 1-3 to delete that as well.
Next, modify the configuration of Desktop Manager during the installation process to support the BlackBerry Internet Service. See KB-03179 for information on how to do this.

You can also try to resend your service books from the BIS.

by: djohnson104Posted on 2007-08-21 at 05:15:55ID: 19737073

So I need to set it up with BIS? I think I am confused here. I was thinking I only need the desktop software to sync everything. So you are telling me I need to select the Blackberry internet service instead of dekstop redirector?

by: Kurt_BraeckmansPosted on 2007-08-21 at 06:12:39ID: 19737442

You're BB is not connected with a BIS or BES for the moment?

by: djohnson104Posted on 2007-08-21 at 06:17:46ID: 19737486

I delted all the servive books. Removed the Desktop Redirctor and reinstalled. I re-installed it for only Desktop Redirctory. I do not want to use BES because i don't have it. I don't want to use BIS because I should not need to right?

I should only have the Destkop Redirctor installed from what i have read. I have it installed an I receive emails fine. I just keep getting those damn etp.na.blacberry.net emails. Some proccess and some do not proccess.

DJohnson:
You are correct.  The redirector will allow you to send and receive emails.  You will see those etp emails which will process then be removed from your inbox (on your workstation).  If this is not happening what email system are you using?
Using the redirector, your workstation must always be logged on so that the redirector application will send/receive the emails.  Using the redirector will not wirelessly sync your calendar or your tasks, etc.  You can however plug the device into that workstation and select the items which you'd like to sync.

We are using MS Exchange 2003. My Outlook is always running, but those messeges just keep stacking up. It will proccess one or two but there are like 10 more that just sit there.

Any ideas?

by: amac81Posted on 2007-08-21 at 11:21:55ID: 19740179

Interesting, because I too am using Exchange 2003.  Do you have your outlook set to "Cached Exchange Mode"?

by: djohnson104Posted on 2007-08-21 at 12:03:08ID: 19740518

No I do not.

What steps did you take in setting yours up? On the phone and on the desktop?

by: amac81Posted on 2007-08-21 at 12:22:00ID: 19740713

I installed the desktop software, plugged in the device when it asked me to, and then set up what I wanted re-directed.  As for the etp emails, they would stay there for a few minutes, becuase I was using the Cached exchange mode then they would disappear.  Try setting your outlook to use the cached exchange mode.

by: djohnson104Posted on 2007-08-21 at 12:26:54ID: 19740753

What version of desktop manger are you using? Mine never asked me to plugin the device.

I would rather not use Cached mode.

by: amac81Posted on 2007-08-21 at 12:35:44ID: 19740838

I am doing this from memory as I have since moved to using a BES, but I believe it was desktop manager 4.1

by: djohnson104Posted on 2007-08-21 at 12:37:12ID: 19740850

ohhh! Did you set up the BES? Is it installed on the Exchange server? That is another option for us, but i don't want to install anythign on our Exchange server, it runs solid and i want to keep it that way. We come from a Exchange 5.5 nightmare.

by: amac81Posted on 2007-08-21 at 12:42:27ID: 19740893

I did set up the BES.  I use SBS, but I didn't want to set BES up on the SBS/Exchange box.  So I grabbed a spare XP workstation, and got the BES server express (free for 1 device and 99$/ license after that).
http://www.blackberry.com/select/server/express_info.shtml

I've read horror stories about BES being installed on the Exchange Server.
