Question

Samsung Instinct Cell Phone: How to use it as a modem, connected to my laptop via USB ?

Asked by: nwembly

So, I want to use my Samsung Instinct Cell Phone (M800) as a modem, connected to my (HP) laptop.

I know the steps how to setup up (at least I think I do):
1) My Network Places-> View network connections->Create a new connection
2)Next->Connect to the Internet
3)Next->Set up my connection manually
4)Next->Connect using a dial-up modem
5)Type the name of your ISP in the following box: (I type) "Sprint PCS" (without the quotes)
6)Type the phone number below: (I type) "#777" (without the quotes)
7) Create this connection for: "Anyone's use", is what I choose.
8) User name: NONE
     Password: NONE
     Confirm Password: NONE
Unchecked: Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from
                          this computer
Unchecked: Make this the default Internet connection
9) Finish

So when I go to dial/ connect it doesn't work. On the screen of my phone it shows that it is connecting/ connected for about 2 seconds.
It then gives an error on my cell phone screen:
Error #67

Registration failure.  Your data username and/or password may be incorrect.  Please try again.  Note: Repeated entries of an invalid password during a 24-hour period will result in a 20-minute suspension.  A suspended data username may not be used until the suspension expires, even when submitted with the correct password.  If this problem persists, you may need to contact Sprint.

I have "Googled" it, and tons of people say that they have gotten it to work (without any logon info: pass or username). But no body goes into a lot of detail.

I have also call Sprint...the person I talked to said it was not possible. I could tell she was a NON-techical person, and did not know what she was talking about. I KNOW it is possible, so I call BS on her part.

Well if anyone can I help, this is worth 500 points
Thanks,
nwembly

I have the Unlimited: Talk/Message/Data Share, 1500 Min for 129.00 per month.

There are a lot of people (like it says in my question) out there if you google it, that are using it this way.

> its only disabled  for the Simply Everything Plans

I don't know what the 'simply everything' plan is... when I got mine they said it required a data plan (i.e. you could not activate it without paying $20 extra per month for internet access).

With a little hunting around I was able to turn on the modem in mine and connect to the internet with it. Be aware Sprint has a 5GB/month limit, and you exceed that with your Instinct as a modem you may be liable for extra charges or subject to cancellation. And I'm betting they won't refund for the phone if that happens.

I took screenshots and pictures of the phone while I was doing it, then decided just the written steps should do.
You need the 6-digit Master Lock Code (MSL) for your phone before you start. I've read where entering the wrong MSL could brick your phone, so I suggest you don't start this procedure without it written down so you can refer to it as needed.

1.) From the dialpad enter ##debugmenu#  (that's ##332846368# since you can't enter letters).
2.) Enter Current Code dialog appears - this is where you enter the master lock code, then click Done.
3.) On the Debug Menu select Toggle NAI down at the bottom.
4.) Select ''Off Modem NAI'' which should return you to the Debug Menu screen, then click Done.
5.) Back on the dialpad, enter ##USB#  (##872#), a dialog should appear that says 'USB as MDM'.
6.) Plug in the Instinct's USB cable to both the phone and the computer.
7.) Open up Nework Connections, click ''Create a new connection'' at the top of the left pane's window, then click Next.
8.) Select ''Connect to the Internet'', click Next.
9.) Select ''Set up my connection manually'', click Next.
10.) Select ''Connect using a dial-up modem'', click Next.
11.) Select the proper adapter if there are multiples shown, e.g. SAMSUNG Mobile Modem (COM#)
12.) For the number to dial use #777 (pound sign, seven, seven, seven).
Username and password blank; check 'Save this username ...' and choose if you want just your logon name to be able to use it, or everyone.
13.) In the Properties, Options tab, UNcheck 'Prompt for name and password' and 'Prompt for phone number'.
14.) On the Advanced tab check the appropriate box[es] if you want to share the connection [and allow others to initiate/end the session].
15.) Back on the General tab, in the Configure button, set the 'bps' to 921600 if it isn't already, then check the 3 'Enable' boxes too. OK, OK.

Your phone should now appear in Network Connections as a Dial-Up connection. Right-click it and choose Connect. See if you can get to your home page. If so, you can now use a full size screen to surf instead of trying to display pages on the 1.5'' x 3.5'' LCD screen.
To end the data call, either right-click it in Network Connections and choose Disconnect, or slide the 'End' bar to the right just like hanging up to end a voice call. You cannot use its voice and data functions at the same time, of course.

IMPORTANT - enter ##USB# again to toggle the USB port back to MSC functions instead of MDM when you're done. The Media Manager can do file functions with it when the USB is in MDM mode, but windows can't... if you don't switch it back to MSC mode, the SD card won't appear as a drive letter in windows when you plug in the USB cable.

Without the Off Modem NAI setting in the Debug Menu, just toggling USB to MDM will result in error 67 (bad credentials) when you connect. So you cannot do this without knowing your master lock code.

Yes, I new all of that... I even got my MSL from Sprint, but it does not seem to unlock the phone. I am going to call them again and see if that is really the right one.

BUT, you kick a**. I will most likely give you the points. I just want to leave this question open for a little bit until I get mine to work. I will then add to this message so others don't have to go through the headache that I have been going through. THANKS!!!

by: nwemblyPosted on 2008-09-03 at 22:19:56ID: 22384437

OK.....For all of you out there that say it is not possible, your wrong. Even Sprint says the phone does not support it and it is impossible to do this. Yet Samsung (the manufacture) built this function in. I even spoke to a supervisor...he said the same thing, that it will not work because the software and the phone are not capable of doing that. Either he was lying through his teeth, or he did not know what he is talking about. Well guess what "Mr. know it all" supervisor, I am on the net WITH the Samsung Instinct. HA HA

I am using it right NOW.

I called back Sprint, and verified the numbers. The first set (MSL) were WRONG. Make SURE to talk to TECH SUPPORT NOT, NOT, NOT, Customer service.

Well, I am up and running.

Thanks,
nwembly

One more thing - install the drivers from the CD that comes with the phone. THEN follow the procedure above. When I wrote it I assumed people would have already done that, but just in case...
e.g. select Media Manager to install from the3 CD. It will warn you that internet access is required to install it, so be connected if you actually want Media Manager to be installed; if you don't want it installed disable your wireless card and/or unplug the ethernet cable from the NIC.
Whether you install Media Manager or cancel the retry at connecting and skip its installation, the CD's routine will install the phone's drivers last. I don't know why they don't have a separate menu entry for installing just the drivers. Reboot if it says to, though XP and vista usually don't require that.
