Question

Blackberry Curve 8320 will not install on XP USB

Asked by: jkockler

I have a blackberry curve 8320 that XP will not assign a driver to.  It sees the device as a RIM composite device.  I try like mad to point it to the correct driver but no matter how many different times, I uninstall / reinstall the blackberry software / usb drivers, it does not install properly.  I have tried the windows Blackberry driver update.  I have attempted to install from the disk and downloaded 3 different versions of the software from the Blackberry website to no avail.  Any help resolving the issue with this device would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Have you tried a different usb cable? Or a different usb port on the computer?

What are you trying to do with the device that needs setting up on the computer?

by: jkocklerPosted on 2009-01-12 at 13:29:38ID: 23357623

Tried differents usb ports ... The cable works fine because the computer recognizes the device when it it is plugged in but it does not find an appropriate driver.  It leaves it in device manager with yellow exclamation mark as "usb RIM composite device."

I am connecting it to the computer to sync calendar, contacts, etc...

Here you go, this should solve your problem. Hope this helps and good luck, let me know how it turns out.

1. Plug device directly into your laptop/PC
2. When "found new hardware" message pops up choose the first option "Have windows automatically search for me"
3. After receiving the message that says "Windows was unable to find the software" it gives you the option of finding the software on your own or inserting the disc that came with your device (note: I tried the CD that came with my device but it did not work, I'm assuming since you're reading this, yours didn't work as well) - Hit "Cancel"
4. After you have been told by your computer that the driver software install failed right click on your "Computer" icon on your desktop.
5. From there click Properties
6. Go to Device Manager
7. In device manager you should see "RIM Composite Device" under ports with a Yellow exclamation point next to it - right click on it
8. Click "Properties" and go to the "Driver" tab.
9. Click the icon that says update driver.
10. A new window pops up that says "browse for driver software on your computer" at the bottom of this window there is an option that says "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" Click on this link.
11. Scroll down the list on the left until you get to "Research in Motion" on the right you will see "Blackberry Device" highlight it and click next
12. You will see a message pop up that says something along the lines of "installing this device driver is not recommended b/c windows can't verify that it is compatible with your hardware, etc." Click "Yes"
13. the driver should install and you should get a message that states "Driver Software install successful"

The final test is to unplug your device and plug it back in and see if you get the message again.

Thanks Jdera.  I made it through to step 11 earlier but I was not looking for Research in Motion.  I chose windows mobile devices or something.  Is that a standard device type to be listed in XP??  I noticed the steps were for Vista, not XP.  I am not with the computer now or I would just go through the step. Thanks!

by: jderaPosted on 2009-01-12 at 15:47:23ID: 23358730

Yes this is a standard type, that "balloon" in XP will show this as well when you plug in a bb device, or it should anyway.  This should work regardless of XP or Vista.  Vista just normally has more issues with BB than XP, especially very early on in Vista's history.

Good Luck!

As I feared, "Research in Motion" nor "RIM" are listed as possible device types in step 11.  It is odd because windows recognizes it as an "Rim Composite Device," you would think it would list it as a device type but no.  Any ideas on how to get it listed or other options?  Thanks!!

Sorry jkockler looks like I dropped the ball on this one. I know that you said this above, but have you tried to use the desktop software with version 4.2?

Also what sp for XP do you have installed?

Also when you go in the desktop software, in the config, does it recognize the device's pin?

Also if you have an xp machine that never had the software installed and just plug in the bb with the usb cable what shows up?

If Windows Sees it as a Blackberry Smartphone under USB Devives..... then you need to make sure that the device itself is in Mass Storage Mode.....

Options>Media Card>Mass Storage Mode Support, turn on... Otherwise you will not get a Drive letter in Windows....

by: jderaPosted on 2009-01-16 at 08:21:30ID: 23394425

Johnb6767 does bring up a good point. Related to that, if you already have a mapped drive with the same letter it is assigning you will have an issue.
