Question

Select Address Book Folders For Sync in Blackberry BES

Asked by: HADDADD3

I currently have my device synced up with my BES.

In my outlook i have multiple address books:
-Personal Contacts
-Public Contacts
-Employees

I only want the "personal contacts" folder to sync with my blackberry. Currently my BB is syncing all 3 folders, how can i change it so it only syncs Personal Contacts (I am using BES, not the desktop manager)

Hi, you either need to move the additional contacts to another folder (e.g. offline PST file), otherwise you will need to set categories via Outlook (e.g. Business or Personal) and then on the device use the Filter option (i.e. Open Contact > Press Menu > Select Filter).  As an FYI in BES 5.0 there is a new option that will allow you to select the actual contact folder that is to be synchronized with the device.

How do i set the category via outlook in bulk?

by: garycutriPosted on 2009-04-21 at 07:13:21ID: 24194610

I normally just open contacts > Change to phone list view > Select all the required contacts > right mouse click in the categories field > Select a category.  If you create a custom category name it can take a while to be updated to the device.

That may not work because i will have to set it each time a contact is added. I moved my "Public contacts" into a "Public Folder" outside of my mailbox. Will this remove it from my device?

by: garycutriPosted on 2009-04-21 at 07:22:25ID: 24194722

When you move contacts into another folder they are normally not purged from the device as they are treated as hard deletions.  What you can do once you have sorted your address book in Outlook (i.e. moved your unrequired contacts to a public folder) is to do a force reload from the device.  To do to open the device Address Book > Press menu > select Options > Type RSET > Select Yes to erasing your device contacts and reloading a fresh copy from the server.

by: HADDADD3Posted on 2009-04-21 at 08:15:23ID: 24195364

I typed RSET. And waited about 20 min, the contacts have not re synced. I also re-sent my service books, still no luck. (im on a blackberry storm if that matters). Any way i can force the contacts to push back through?

Do you leave any contacts in your personal contacts list or sub folders in Outlook?

by: HADDADD3Posted on 2009-04-21 at 08:20:30ID: 24195426

Yes... I have a few contact lists, none of them are sync'ing.

See attached image.

If the contacts didnt automatically reload just open Contacts > Press menu > Select Options > Select Desktop > Change Wireless Synchronization to No > Exit and Save.  After a minute or two repeat this process and change Wireless Synchronization back to Yes.  After a few minutes the contacts should start appearing on your device.
