Firewire port devices not recognized

Hello, I have a compaq presario 2500 laptop, windows xp with a  4pin firewire port that worked fine up until recently.  In the device manager it says it is working fine, but when I plug a firewire device into the port now, nothing happens.  I tried repairing the registry with several different programs, using different cables, repairing (reinstalling) windows, and heres the strange part:  I even bought a brand new pcmcia cardbus adapter (adaptec duoconnect 1422) w/ combo usb 2.0 and firewire where the usb works perfectly, but the firewire, even on this newly purchased device doesnt work!!!  (on neither the 4pin OR 6pin ports that came w/ the card).  One thing i noticed is that when i plug in my ipod through the firewire it DOES turn the ipod in, so i can tell it is getting power from the port, but nothing is recognized in windows.  Please help!  (I would love to avoid completely formatting the system to completely reinstall windows, but if i have to i will).
