Win 98SE laptop external CD-ROM reads system CDs but not CDs I create w/ the drivers I need

I have an old Sony Superslim laptop that I love because it's so small and light -- perfect for travel and taking to meetigngs. But it's getting old, and I bought a better-condition replacement on eBay. The seller had cleaned the hard drive and reinstalled Win 98, in the process deleting the drivers needed for PCMCIA wireless card or Ethernet-connector card.

Linksys said their card wouldn't work with 98 but would with 98SE, so I upgraded. It still won't install from the Linksys CD.

The computer uses an external CD-ROM drive, which plugs into the PCMCIA slot. The drive reads CDs such as the original Sony disks that came with the computer, the Win 98 restore disk, and the Win 98 SE upgrade disk. But it will not read any CDs I create.

I can't figure out how to get drivers onto the computer. I can't connect to the internet without loading a driver for the wireless card or the Ethernet-connector card, and the computer won't recognize the CDs with their drivers. Nor the drivers for either of my flash drives. I've tried loading drivers onto floppy disks, but even the drivers for the flash drivers are too large to fit.

I seem to be stuck with a perfectly good computer that can't talk to the outside world, and is useless.

How can I install drivers? Why won;'t the CD-ROM drive recognize the CDs I burn on my desktop computer?
