The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Need Video Card for PCMCIA

Tags: video, card, pcmcia
I need a better video card than what came with my notebook. The only option that I am aware of is a PCMCIA video card. I am not too concerned about a tv tuner, though if it comes with a card, great; otherwise, I simply want a better card.

My MoBo card is: Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
My monitor is: 17-inch Ultrabright" WXGA TFT display panel
I have 4GB of dual-channel 5300 memory (low latency)
I hard-drive is 200GB 16MB Cache at 7200 RPM

Please let me know what else you would like to know. As you may be able to tell from the added components, price is not a problem. I am not doing any 3D design stuff (no Maya or 3DS Max), but I simply want something better (if possible).

Thanks!

The graphic video on this laptop is good one, why you want PCMCIA video card? Have problem playing with game?

Hi Punky!

I was worried about receiving a response because there aren't many experts in this section, so thank you very much!

As you know, the graphics card is only 128 MB and it is shared, so my concern is that I may run into difficulties in the future. I intend on using this laptop for about 1.5-2 years before I give it to family or friends, so perhaps I should stay with what I have. I also use two other notebooks for other specific uses too, but I want this to be my media notebook.

As you can likely tell, I am a novice at this, so my ignorance is likely the issue here, but based on your comment, it appears that my MoBo card is sufficient. The rating that I receive through the Vista interface (Windows Vista Experience) is 3.0 for my video card and 3D business and game modeling is also a 3.0, where all of my other components are head and shoulders above 3.0. Does this matter much or is it marketing hype.

Do you know if I have any other options available to me? According to Gateway I do, but they will not help on this topic, so perhaps they don't know (and don't care, which wouldn't surprise me with Gateway).

Thanks again!

-Don

Don, because the system you have there is limited because built-in onboard, but even share memory, it is still good video. The max resolution of 1440 × 900 is very well. i dont think any PCMCIA video card could provide better than. Other vendors such as Dell laptops on newer model, they use Mini PCI video card (no built-in), so you can easily upgrade to what you can afford.

Bottom line is to use the video as is, dont worry about rating given by Vista. If you use Vista, and the Areo appears OK, then nothing else needed.

Hi Punky,

Thanks again for your assistance. The Aero appears just fine and  it is a tri-boot system (XP-PRO 64-bit; XP-PRO 32-bit and Vista Business 64-bi), so all is well.

Take care,

Don

Well, multi boots system! what do you do with those :o) You could always use virtual (VMWare or M$ Virtual 2007) that helps to save space of the hard drive though.

Thanks & Regards.

I agree. :-) I do not use EMC's, but I do use Microsoft's, both their server and desktop products. Sometimes I prefer, however, to keep the system files on their own partitions (physical or virtual), which I don't know how to do with MS's.
