PCMCIA Modem not detected

Ive got a laptop (using Windows XP) here where the modem port (onboard) was dismantled and unusable. Since then, a Diamond PCMCIA modem was installed and worked for about 2 weeks. The modem suddenly disappeared and I have been unsuccessful in getting a PCMCIA modem to work again.

Some known facts:
No PCMCIA modem will work, regardless of brand.
Other PCMCIA devices do work (including a NIC)
Ive reformatted the computer with a fresh install but still same issues
No devices show up in Add Hardware or Add Modem automatically

And click on the link regarding pcmcia not automatically detected.
