Thanks but the latch seems to work OK, just want to disable the automatic start up feature.

Even though this is a fairly new machine (just off warrantee) and the hinges aren't damaged, it persists in starting itself up while in the bag. It gets extremely hot and of course this wears down the battery. Couldn't find anything on the Toshiba web site and didn't want to pay for tech support from Toshiba. I've tried all the Power Management settings that seem related and downloaded the latest BIOS. Does anyone know how to stop this laptop from starting up automatically when the lid is opened? Other possible solutions also welcomed. Thanks!

Which method are you using to set hibernation mode, closing the lid or pushing the power button. If its the lid option you should change it to the power button option so that the jostling of the laptop in transit will not start the laptop up if the lid is opened slightly.
To do this, double click on the Toshiba power icon in the systray(looks like a light bulb)
This will open the Toshiba Power Management Utility
Click on the ADVANCED tab
In the first section the HIBERNATE option should have a check mark beside it.
The next section under the LID options, select NONE
In the POWER BUTTON section select HIBERNATE.
This will allow hibernate to be engaged by pressing the power button.
To start up the computer from Hibernation mode, press the
power button until the on/off light glows blue.
