This is going to be a touchy topic as we will not be allowed to post CDKEYs on this web site, and it's also against the EULA, obviously. You may be out of luck on this one, and besides, why would you want to run Windows ME????! We're in Year 2007, and "ME" in Windows ME stands for "More Errors". I would stay truly away from Windows ME.

It might be an idea to sell that PC on eBay and fork out a little more money for a new system. Trust me, it'll be worth it!

I agree with the above about not using ME. The machine though is still a fine laptop, It works very well with Ubuntu Linux which is free and you don't need a product key.. XP would also run fine, but Ubuntu is more modern and better.

If the original CD is Windows ME, I doubt it will have more than 512MB RAM, I'm guessing more like 128MB RAM, and it might even be 64MB!!! I won't bother running Windows XP on 128MB, especially when coupled with a slower CPU (a Windows ME laptop must be at least 6 years old).

eBay it! Most people buy old junks for spare parts and the like, especially laptop LCDs are good spare parts.

It can take up to 512 MB RAM, The display has a good 1400x1050 resolution (of course the insp 8000 was sold with different displays, so that could be different). It's a good laptop, at least in that configuration. It might also take up to 1 GB Ram, that would have to be tested, and RAM is easily available.

Lets try this again. just dont hit the submit button until finished typing!
this machine came with ME OS and later i upgraded the hard drive to a larger one and bought the XP OS add on from best buys. but to make the whole thing work, i had to reload ME than XP add on. thats what i am trying to do now. but of course no ME product code. can i start all  over again with the boot up using the cd for the XP OS? I still have that product code.
i will be using ebay soon i hope!

I would try booting the computer from the XP CD.  See if you can install XP from there.   You also might need to change CMOS settings to boot to the CD ROM drive before the hard drive.

If you bought the upgarde CD you might want to contact Dell and see if they can release your serial number based on your service tag.  I'm not sure if they will but it is worth a trying.

by: rindiPosted on 2007-11-01 at 07:12:23ID: 20193010

To install an XP Upgrade, it isn't required to have ME installed. It'll just ask you to insert the media during installation to check whether you have an original windows OS.
