Print spooler stops when printing PDF

When trying to print a PDF document (Adobe version 8.1) the print spooler stops and the PDF gets stuck in the Q. I can print other PDFs to this printer. I can print the "problem"PDF to other network printers.
This happens on multiple PCs including XP and Vista that have HP LJ 1022.
The only way to clear the Q is to unplug the USB from the printer/ log in as a local admin/ start print spooler/
delete the job from Q/ replug the USB.

Why does this happen?

Thanks. the LJ 6L totally worked.
I recently worked on this issue and found a workaround...
Since the issue appears to be compatibility between the driver for the 1022, 1022n HP printer, I tried using a later driver in hopes of backward compatibility.  Using the HP 1200 pcl driver instead of the 1022 or 1022n driver allowed printing of pdf documents with no print spooler stoppage.
We have been having similar issues here, when printing pdf documents to hp laserjet 1022's it kills the print spooler. when you restart it it stops again. There does not seem to be a driver that will fix this issue and has to do with the printer being a host based printer. This is what we have been doing as a work arround. if the print spooler keeps stopping do the following
in windows 7
delete all the files located in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS
now start the spooler

now open a pdf
Click on file
click on print
click on advanced
put a check mark in "print as image"
click ok
click ok

as long as the print as image is selected it will always print. Typically once this is checked for the printer it will save as a default function. In one case the settings keep reverting to this box being unchecked.
