Question

XP Drivers instead of Vista on Notebook PC

Asked by: ArtG2521

Ok guys, I need help.  I've hit this problem before and I've tried to find the right drivers and all I'm doing is pulling my hair out.  Here's the scoop.  The morons at HP will not help me in anyway to find the correct drivers for every device in my HP DV6700 notebook PC.  They said it was meant to be Win Vista and since I have wiped out Win Vista (because my client, and I, hate it) and have replaced it with Win XP that I will have to find the correct drivers myself.  After searching and trying some different drivers, only the video and  the AMD processor update seem to work.  I still need everything else.  Lan, wireless, audio, card reader, etc. etc.  My service tag says DV6707US which I beleive is the real model number.  Can you please help with this?

I would say your best bet is to reinstall Vista (yeah, I know... I hate it too) and go into the device manager. Get out a piece of paper and write down all the devices installed (in Device Manager). Search the internet and make sure you can get XP drivers for all the hardware, then install XP with the drivers on-hand on a CD or something.

Thankfully Vista installs pretty quickly.

Download the demo of Everest Ultimate [http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=3&ps=UE&lang=en ]

Install it and see what it shows for the components you need to install.

You can also try System Information for Windows [http://www.gtopala.com/ ] and Belarc Advisor [http://www.majorgeeks.com/Belarc_Advisor_d1385.html ]

Between the three of them, they're almost certain to "know" what your hardware components are :-)

Then it's simply a "Google" for the right drivers ==> or post the details here and we'll help.

i prefer siw : http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html
you can also try this :
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Information.
Click on "components" and highlight "problem devices". Any hardware device with a driver problem will be listed here. Make a note of the first line of the entry. It will contain a Vendor number and a Device number (VEN. . . . DEV. . . .) both four digits long.
Look up those numbers here:   http://www.pcidatabase.com/index.php

This will tell you the manufacturer and the chip number.  Check the manufacturer's website first

personally your best avenue here is to have a dual boot  the HDD has sufficient space install xpsp2 to a new partition. states it has>>

Dealing with a Vista OS and also a HP Genuine regestered Brand their products have specific drivers..  trying to replace the Vista HP mainboard drivers so you can run xpsp2 is really just a waste of time.

I refuse to give up on this!  I've always been able to install XP with the right drivers.  Merete, thanks for the suggestions, but I really want to have XP running on this laptop.  I've posted the info as the other people suggested.  Can you people or new people can forward and help me search for all the drivers I need for XP?

More Info:
The motherboard is a  Quanta, Model 30CF
The CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-57
The graphics are GeForce Go 7150M

Please help!

Run Everest & Belarc and post what they show.

sure just flexing my opinions,
Did I include this earlier? Good read
downgrade a customer's DV6500 laptop to Win XP Pro.
http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/questionanswer.do;HP-FORUMS-S-WPA-IDX=HdwRcQg3LKkPvTLL1JttLDfGQLQzgLkYQQBZTmMrhymW5d3Qx5st!1900983790!-245749092?threadId=1161748&admit=109447627+1201500273147+28353475

The processor is a great choice
The CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-57

Hard disk controller SATA Hard Disk Drive, you'll need to install these first so xp can detect the hdd.
the mainboard drivers will not be exact since the supported drivers for the mainboard are HP specifications. HP built the mainboard.

Have you changed the hardware on the mainboard  the video card you mention is not the one in the specs for your model.
Video adapter
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
For nvidia drivers just go to Nvidia you need uninstall the previous drivers first.
 GeForce Go 7150M
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/NVIDIA/NVIDIA-32bit-ForceWare-GeForce-Go-15655.shtml

Then I'd suggest you go to http://driveragent.com/ and do the free scan and see what's missing

Just add The motherboard is a  Quanta, Model 30CF
have you deleted the partition?
Software included
Recovery partition (including possibility to recover system, applications and drivers separately); Optional re-allocation of recovery partition; Recovery CD/DVD creation tool; Symantec" Norton Internet Security" 2008 (60 days live update); Notebook Help & Support

Okay I have offered my opinions wait a day or 2 till other experts come in, maybe more Vista to XP savvy than me, also its the long week end here.
Good Luck with it I really hope you do find the drivers  looks pretty hard to me since we are dealing with Vista

by: MeretePosted on 2008-01-27 at 22:33:52ID: 20757198

I use this tool to find my sys specs
SIW

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/siw.html

by: garycasePosted on 2008-01-27 at 22:41:41ID: 20757210

That's now 3 suggestions to use SIW => all with the same link :-)   [see the 2nd post (mine) and 3rd post (nobus) in this thread for the first two times it was suggested]

ArtG2521 ==>  Now if you'd just run it and post the results (Everest & Belarc would also be useful ... the 3 often complement each other) we could probably give you direct links to the drivers you need.

by: ArtG2521Posted on 2008-01-27 at 23:05:45ID: 20757289

Here's Belarc and Everest.  It's 2am, I'm tired.  I will check out what you have to say in addition, tomorrow.

Thanks.

awe shucks lol,  didnt see the other offerings for SIW completely missed them.  I dont offer suggestion when already offered and I even read the previous comments first.  It was hidden ;P

by: ArtG2521Posted on 2008-01-28 at 04:17:44ID: 20758343

I did install the UAA first then the 2nd audio drivers ( I tried 2 or 3 different ones) and none of the 2nd drivers work.  They go to install and say they can't find the media device.

I tried a tech's nforce chipset AIO and it didn't work.  All my laptop will do is blue screen and reset over and over.  I did a system restore through Safe Mode and returned it to normal.  So I need the correct NVidia Chipset Drivers for the system which I assume will be the ones that go with the Quanta board.

I, of course, killed the partition before and loaded Win XP Home Edition from scratch.

I will try the drivers you sent me links for and let you know.

by: ArtG2521Posted on 2008-01-28 at 06:49:17ID: 20759342

Ok
The video drivers work.
The card reader drivers work
The wireless lan drivers work.

I still need audio, ethernet (wired), nforce chipset

by: MotoCrazyPosted on 2008-01-28 at 07:50:40ID: 20760059

The nForce chipset can just be downloaded from nVidia's website. Just select the chipset series (650i, 680i etc.). Select nForce from the first drop-down menu and follow from there =). That may actually get your NIC and audio working too if they are built-in.

http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

by: PCBONEZPosted on 2008-01-28 at 13:42:11ID: 20763184

Audio, ethernet (wired), and nforce chipset should all be part of the nforce driver package.
...
The trick here is the driver package for HP/Vista/this laptop is probably a cusom OEM version for HP and so there will be no listing for it at nVidia. They will also change the name of the actual chipset a little for the OEM variety so you can't look it up at nVidea that way either.
....
The thing to do is find the closest name to your chipset and hope the genaric driver package for that chipset is close enough. (Usually is.)
....
From what I can tell your is called an nForce 650M.
That means the main chipset is in the nVidea "6 Series".
....
The nVidea 6 series includes a "nForce 650i Ultra" and an "nForce 650i SLI" which both use the same driver package and have XP drivers.
There are no other nForce listed as variations of "650".
Cross your fingers, hold your teeth right, and hope this works....

by: PCBONEZPosted on 2008-01-28 at 23:44:41ID: 20766005

The next thing to try is one up and one down from 650.

by: ArtG2521Posted on 2008-01-29 at 04:03:46ID: 20766984

Ok, because 650 goes to a BSOD for a millisecond and then restarts.  I use System Restore to get it back.  I will try the other chipsets now.  If this doesn't work, I give up and will have to go back to crappy Vista.

by: ArtG2521Posted on 2008-01-29 at 08:42:04ID: 20769472

I went to NVidia.com and they have a new scan service that will tell you the product you have and the drivers it recommends.  I did what it said and it still doesn't work.  Here is the info I got from the scan:

Product: NForce 560/NForce 520

Driver: NForce Driver version 12.15 WHQL

Any suggestions from this info?  These drivers by the way, will not help with the audio, so I still need to figure that out.

by: PCBONEZPosted on 2008-01-29 at 17:05:50ID: 20773882

You are breaking new ground with this one.
At his point it's trial and error and shear luck.
.
The biggest factor making is hard is MS's manipulation of the industry to force the use of Vista.
[If it was any good they wouldn't have to force it, ya think?]
.
There is also that nVidea doesn't want to support drivers of OEM's that use customized versions of chipsets.
And that OEM's think proprietary is better.
It's certainly not better for US so who is it better for?
.
If you are forced back to Vista I suggest this.
Set it up as mulit-boot with Vista, XP, and Linux:
- Keep trying to get XP working as time permits.
[Odds are eventually someone will find a way even if it's custom built drivers.]
- Find a version of Linux that suits you so you and your customer can start the Linux learning curve and eventually get off the Microsoft bandwagon. If XP and Vista are any indication dealing with MS is only going to get worse and worse as time goes on. MS wants the software to be LOCKED to a piece of hardware over their piracy paranoia and this is only there latest plan to make things that way.
[This will wean you off MS dependence without loosing functionality in the mean time.]
-
.

I'm not that good on the jargon and had started to write about the anti piracy preventions imbedded in the new system.
Especialy with windows updates, if one doesnt install the updates even in Xpsp2  the locked in anti piracy clause will activate and shut down the system.

Ok, I give up!  I can not install a dual boot nor can I wean the client off MS.  I agree with what you say (PCBonez, Merete) but it will not be practical for this client.  One last thing you guys/gals can help me with.  I am going to return this to Vista, BUT I have seen information out there on how to tweak Vista to be more like XP.  While it will never truly be XP, apparently from what I've seen/heard it can be more XP-ish by changing certain settings, etc.  I especially would like to make Windows Explorer look and work like XP and not Vista.

So can you point me to some links or give me some info on what to change/tweak in Vista to get it closer to XP?

Thanks.

Excellent!  I want to hold out just a bit for others to make suggestions and then I will award points.

Once more, is their a way to get Windows Explorer look and operate like XP's version?  I HATE Vista's version of Windows Explorer.  Maybe a third party software version?

The video Merete referenced does a good job of showing you how to do most of the tweaks that will "downgrade" Vista's GUI while retaining the fundamental OS.   But it doesn't address what I find to be the biggest nuisance in Vista -> the new (and in my opinion definitely NOT improved) Windows Explorer.

I use this on my Vista installations:  http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm
It's basically a superset of XP's Windows Explorer (I've got it installed on XP as well) ... and will be VERY familiar to you :-)

... it's also free for private or academic use; and reasonably priced for other environments.

There is plenty of clever programmers offering their findings on the WWW
Just search them out.
I do feel for you and why you don't wish to give up yet,
Lets take a look at the whol eprocess of how you started this.
To install xp over Vista requires some pre planning.
Your only problem as I see is the HP brand name, if you own a new Vista non generic brand DESKTOP  you could format the hard drive and install Xp/
If you re-install Vista backup the mainboard drivers.
