Laptop/Desktop Diagnostics Software

Currently have a laptop which is pretty messed up.  My thinking is that there is an LCD issue, since I am able to use it ok with an external monitor.  I am trying to find out about a good piece of software to use and assist in diagnosing hardware issues with laptops or desktops.  The laptop in question is a presario v5000.  I know on dell systems they send a diagnostics cd, but compaq did not have one.
