Hi there,
I've got a Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. Recently I started having a problem with it going on standby automatically. The first time it happened, I'd been using some pretty heavy-duty software (Adobe CS3) for about an hour when all of a sudden it went into standby. The only way to get it out was to close the lid and reopen it. It then proceeded to go into standby on its own repeatedly every few minutes until I gave up and turned it off. I left it overnight and then tried again the next day. Again, it gave me about an hour before it started doing it again.
This time I called Dell and the customer service rep took over remotely and tried a number of things: he checked the power settings (all of which were already set to never) and then changed some of the other standby settings to "do nothing". All the latter achieved was to make the computer skip the "preparing for standby" window. Instead, the screen would just go black straight away. So then he tried restoring Windows to a previous restore point. That didn't help either and when it was restarting, the screen went black and didn't come back on at all. He decided it was a faulty screen and put in a request to have a technician come out and replace it.
After I got off the phone, the screen revived but the standby thing continued. The next day, the technician arrived and changed the screen. That didn't fix it. I'm still getting the same standby problem.
I've checked for viruses. I've tried pulling the battery out and running it just on AC power (I normally run it on AC power anyway). I just want to make absolutely sure this is not a problem that I can fix myself before I call Dell back and say that replacing the screen didn't fix the problem.
