Hi,
Not sure what to do. I have the Dell XPS1330 which I very much liked. I'm a demanding user and have a lot of applications running.
All seemed fine but then one day after playing some video files the laptop slowed down to a CRAWL! One time it was taking about 45 mins to close down so I just powered it down by holding power button down.
I have not really pined down under what circumstnces it occurs, but I notice I can now go a week without it happening when I keep my laptop raised above the desk (I place it on an empty packaging tape roll to give it lots of ventilation) I avoid running video files.
Sometimes it still occurs.
My fans on the laptop ar always running. Even after a cold book, after a few minutes in they kick in and never stop. At first the laptop used to be vey quiet. IT stillqueit fans relatively to some, but they are always on now.
Again I do run a lot on this laptop. I have VMWare on it, it outputs to two monitors (One via HDMI and the other regular monitor output). Also apps like Dreamweaver, SAGE accountig, one note HP printer software, Samsung printer software.
Memory wise I have upgraded to 4GB (Crucial) from the 2GB that was originally shipped. (I did try going back to the 2GB for a while but then I was getting low on memory all the time- Vista OS)
I've used XPS tecnhical support three times on the device and run through procedures to clean up start up etc. and they helped but did not really solve the intermitent MEGA slow problem. Currently conclusion is to try a comlete re-installation.
A complete re-installation for me is quite a lot of work. have so many apps and getting the PC the way I liked it (well accept for the slow down took a lot of time.
All the Dell F12 tests pass Ok (although one of the memory tests with Dell memory took 12 hours to complete - was told this is OK by Dell)
So what coudl this be? Is my laptop overheating? IT does get very hot to the tough everywhere (not hot enough to burn yourself, but very warm. Dell said a high performance laptop will get hot and that it should really just shut down rather then run slow.
I can push Dell for a repaid, but what parts? Mother board , graphics card? Maybe it is software?
Even when running slow I check the processes running and can find nothing unusual (e.g. IE showing 25%)
Note when it goes slow the CPU shows a total use of 100%, but I cannot see a particular process which is making this 100%.
