Laptop is overheating and shutting down, Fan seems to be working

My laptop keeps overheating and shutting down. It does get very hot on the bottom. I hear the fan going so I know that it is working and I am not blocking any of the vents. Is it likely a problem with the fan? What can I do to stop this from happening or at least from happening so often, it is frustrating as i usually lose some work.
