The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Dell XPS 1530 with XP Pro and Media Direct - Possible??

Asked by Raland9966 in PC Laptops, Windows XP Operating System

I purchased a Dell 1530 and needed to remove Vista and install XP Pro due to some legacy programs that would not run with Vista/IE7. XP is not directly supported for the 1530 thought all the device drivers are available if you look at the 1330/1730 so I completely formated the drive returning it to a single partion.
It appears that if you do not have the Media Direct parition when you press the Media Direct buttion it trashes the MBR. From my research on the web it appears there is NO place in the bios or otherwise to disable the button. Did I mention the user accidently pressed the button after I shipped the laptop 600 miles away. ARGH!.
My basic understanding is that Media Direct sets in it's own 2.5 gig partiion and does not interact with the OS in any way??? My only option at this point seems to be formating the drive again but this time creating a partion for MD and re-installing it. Then reinstalling XP in a partion for the OS. This way if the button is accidently pressed MD will not wipe the boot record and the user should be able to exit MD and open XP.
Anyone have experience with this?? I'm worried that MD does in some way use the OS and finding XP instead of Vista is going to leave the laptop just as useless as it is now and I will have wasted more time trying to make this work rather than just going immediately to a different laptop. Appreciate any assistance. thanks!
