The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Trying to "Speed Up" PC

Asked by julianmatz in PC Laptops, Windows XP Operating System, Computer Memory (RAM)

Hi! I need to speed up my laptop by a good bit. I use it for work, which involves a lot of multi-tasking. The default programs I always have open are Firefox, Thunderbird and Outlook Express (for personal e-mails). Almost always I also have Dreamweaver open and frequently use Photoshop, Putty, etc. and sometimes listen to Windows Media Player, open MS Word, PDFs, etc.

Basically, if you saw my task bar on an average day, it would be very full :)

Also, on Firefox I have an average of 20-35 tabs open (as I often work on multiple tasks).

I use Norton Internet Security 2008, which I realise is fairly resource intensive.

I tend to leave my laptop turned on constantly for the simple reason that it takes so long to boot it up and start Windows (I presume this would cause the RAM not to become freed up).

The most resource intensive (Mem usgage and VM usage) is Firefox and Thunderbird.

There's usually a fairly low load on the CPU, so I don't think that's the problem (especially since it's a Core 2 Duo).

I've ordered 2 RAM modules to upgrade the laptop from 1 Gig to 4 Gigs, and am wondering if this will speed up the machine considerably or if there's something else I can do to improve performance. A while back I set my paging file size to 1800-2600 MB on the 2 partitions of my drive and have adjusted Windows for "best performance". Would a better drive increase the performance or would this be indifferent with the 4 Gig RAM upgrade?Start Free Trial
