Hi,
A user came to me this morning with a strange issue. Her laptop was working fine yesterday and today the NIC seems to be acting up. She's using a HP NC6220, running Windows XP w/ SP2
The NIC doesn't seem to be showing up in Windows.
- When I run IPCONFIG, the media state shows disconnected.
- In device manager, the network card is not present - no adapter with the yellow question mark or anything, even after Scanning for hardware changes. Just the wireless network card adapter is there.
- No "Local Area Connection" in Control Panel>Network connections
- The LED lights on the network port seem to be blinking perfectly fine. The green light is solid and the orange activity light occasionally blinks.
- I've reset the BIOS to defaults. Don't think this user is capable of changing the BIOS from yesterday anyway.
- I've logged on to Windows in safe mode with networking, but same problem
- I've restarted, powered off but no luck
At the moment, I'm trying to rule out whether it's a hardware or software problem. I'm downloading Simply Mepis and I plan to boot from it and hope it has the drivers and detect the network card (IF the network card IS working)
Any of your gurus out there have any other tools is can use to rule out if it's a hardware issue i'd appreciate it. I just know that if i take it to the HP server center, the first thing they are going to say is "FORMAT WINDOWS", and i can't really do that.
Best Regards,
CV.
