Hi Everyone
I've been given a faulty Toshiba laptop/notebook to look at. The problem is that when I switch on the power button, various lights come on, but there is no picture what-so-ever on the screen. There are no beeps either, so no idea what's causing it. I've tried connecting an external monitor (and yes I've pressed the fn + 5 keys to switch monitors), but that isn't recognising any video signal either.
You can hear the hard drive start to whir, but there is no continued chugging sound like you'd get if the o/s was continuing to load. As there's no picture, I can't tell if the BIOS is giving me any warnings, whcih is why the HDD doesn't sound lke it's still booting.
I know the HDD is ok, as I've taken it out and connected it to an external caddy and have been able to remove the necessary files (pictures, music, etc) that the person wanted kept if I couldn't fix the problem. I've also scanned the HDD for any faults, but it comes up with a clean bill of health.
So, this leave me with 3 possibilities (that I can think of): 1) the video chip is fcuked; 2) the memory is fcuked; or 3) the motherboard is fcuked.
I've taken the keyboard off and the memory is hidden in a single slot beneath the keyboard (ie. it is not accessible from the bottom of the lappy). Also, the ribbon connector to the monitor looks ok (ie. there are no obvious marks to suggest it's burnt out or anything). However, I'm not too sure what else could be wrong with it, or if it's fixable.
Apprently, their 20yo daughter used it a few weekends ago and everything was fine. She switched it off and didn't try and use it again until this weekend just gone. When she tried switching it on, there was nothing. They've tried rebooting it, but to no avail, and that's when they gave it to me to look at.
If this were a desktop PC, I'd have some things I could try, but as it's a lappy, I'm a bit more stumped.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers
G
