The Solution Rating System

Backlight Not Coming On

I have a DV6000 in for repair, service tag dv6102od, and the backligfht will not come on.  An external monitor works perfectly.  I can see the image on the laptop LCD but of course, it's not lit.  First try was an inverter, no change.  I thought maybe I had a bad spare inverter so i tried another, same result, no light.  I Then tried a known good LCD panel thinking that maybe the light itself was damaged.  That also did not light.  I was able to flash the bios to the latest from HP since other laptops near this series have had backlight issues, some even had the warranty extended for a similar issue.  I removed the CMOS battery, reset the CMOS.  (I'd also add that the BIOS settings that are available for this laptop has NO settings for the LCD or external monitor, this is is a VERY plain bios)  This one is not listed as having the trouble so no support from HP is being given.  I have removed the board and tested outside the case, same result.  This model has a magnetic backlight switch so there is no mechanical switch that I am able to disconnect to test if it's the switch but if I have the board running with the external monitor and pass a magnet over the top left side of the board, the machine shuts down and goes to sleep.  This makes me think that I should rule out the backlight switch but I'm stubborn and it's still in the back of my head that maybe the switch is multi function or maybe there is more than one magnetic relay involved.  I've examined the board in the area that seems to have the magnetic switch and I can't identify what may be the switch(s).  I was also looking to see if by some weird chance the relay could be in the cable connector?  I've never seen that before but stranger things have been found in the past.  

So.......  I was wanting to know if anyone has had any experience with this and if maybe I could cut the trace of whatever the magnetic relay is?  Any comments or suggestions at this point would be a great help!  Start Free Trial
