Power Problem with Dell laptop, need help.

I have a Dell XPS M1210 and was hoping someone knew whether or not i need the battery connected in order for the AC power to work?

I remember there being some laptops that use to need the battery connected in order for it to work even on AC power and was wondering if this model is one of those?

I don't have the battery and when plugged into the mains it doesn't power on (i was told when it was given to me that it worked with the battery) I replaced the DC socket thinking that had gone but it still doesn't come on with just the AC power.  Could this be one of those laptops that needs the battery plugged in to work?
