Question

Can anyone help me with resetting the bios on Dell Inspiron 5150?

Asked by: hamidovt

I need to reset BIOS on my Dell Inspiron 5150.
Dell manual advises this http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/en/sm/bios.htm

But my problem is that display is not working, so I need some hard way of doing this (with some kind of switch or jumper on the motherboard).

CMOS battery is soldered to the board, see http://filedb.experts-exchange.com/incoming/2008/01_w04/1740/100-7727.JPG ; battery is the blue thing in the bottom-center of the picture. Removing the battery is not an option for me, I do not have neccessary skils to do that.

if the display is not working, resetting the BIOS will have no effect on the issue
you should solve the display problem first, by either hooking another video card or checking the monitor cables and connections etc.

Well actually I have not asked whether it will help or not, I asked how to hard-reset BIOS... I will explain you the background. My laptop was restarting every 20-30 minutes and I have foud out that this was casued by overheating issue (something wrong with design of Inspiron 5150). Internet suggested that the solution is to clean up the cooling unit. Which I exactly did, however currently the monitor is not working. So the possible reasons are:
- Cable(s) is not connected properly
- Display is damaged
- Memory is damaged  (by static electr. or something else)
- Something wrong with BIOS
- Graphical card is damaged  (by static electr. or something else)
- Mother bord is damaged  (by static electr. or something else)

I have doule checked cables, so that looks OK
I have tried to connect directly to the PC monitor a it is not working, so problem is before the diplay
I have tried with one and the another of the memory chips, so either both are damaged  or memory is OK
I need to reset the bios, ACTUALLY THIS WAS MY QUESTION TO YOU EXPERTS
Unfortunately I do not have a similar laptop to test the video & mother board

Can you advise me on reseting the BIOS?
You may also give me a good suggestion, but my skills and hardware resourses are quite limited....

The manual I have is the same as http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/en/sm/
and the only way suggested there is on start-up....

I have hoped that there is an expert with knowledge of laptops is around

To only way to reset the bios in your case is to  remove the CMOS battery for half an hour.
You may need a soldering iron to remove the contact.
Check http://xtreview.com/review113.htm
Hope that answers your question.

I do not know how to reset the bios, but if your display is not working but the laptop is powering on, I would remove the heatsink / fan, remove the cpu, check all pins are intact and not bent, reseat the cpu and ensure that you lock the cpu in place using the ziff lock screw. Reassemble heatsink & fan etc, genarally a laptop will not display video if the cpu is seated incorrectly.

Well, none of advises above helped me. The CMOS battery is soldered to the board, so the only realistic option would be unsoldering the batery. However I do not want that...
