Hi

OK .. so we can track things down, why don't you disable the wireless connection and make sure the wired connection is enabled.  I'm wondering what you meant by running diagnostics and the card is fine?  How did you determine that?  What did you run for diagnostics?

Get back and we'll go from there, or if you have any questions about any of this.

Wireless is off and I downloaded from the Dell website their Broadband Diagnostics.

If I do an ipconfig it says media disconnected.

have you checked to see if the four connectors inside the Ethernet port are still there??...

(happened on one of my laptops... card reported fine but wouldn't detect a cable plugged it)

Yes all are there and straight

What kind of internet connection do you have? Is it a modem and router?  Or something else?  Also, what is the port configuration on the devices.  For example, one ethernet port on the modem, and one WAN and 4 ethernet ports on the router?

Waiting your response.

Nothing wrong there, have 6 other pc's all working fine on my home network.  This laptop belongs to a friend and he claims he has always had this problem with the wired network.

OK .. So your plugging it into any port and no go.  Is the maintenance contract on the computer still active?

by: StardotstarPosted on 2009-05-30 at 20:47:44ID: 24511350

yes and no

by: uucknaaaPosted on 2009-05-30 at 20:58:33ID: 24511376

So the status of the wired card should be "no connection", or "waiting for connection", or something like that.  And the diagnostics on the card are OK.

The only thing I can think of is to loopback the ethernet connection and see if it shows a connection.  It obviously won't have any internet, but the "no connection" should go away.

Here's a way to build a loopback if you wanna try it:

I'll keep an eye on your response.

nope still says a network cable is unplugged

by: uucknaaaPosted on 2009-05-30 at 21:45:40ID: 24511457

I'd say the problem is with that port.  Luckly, the wireless still works and you can always get a USB or card ethernet adapter if necessary.  You could also get a replacement motherboard.  They aren't too bad to replace.  But, I wouldn't with the computer in it's current state.

What do you think?

by: StardotstarPosted on 2009-05-30 at 21:54:13ID: 24511468

no you are right, since it works wireless.

Thanks
