Question

Machine is not in committed state

Swapped MB on a HP Elitebook 6930P and need get the serial number into BIOS.

At boot I get a message stating "Warning. Machine is not in committed state. Invalid serial number", but when entering BIOS there is no way for me to enter it. Read on HP forums that I need HP SetConfig Utility 1.36 to do this, but I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone have this program or maybe another solution that could help me?

use this tool. run it from a bootable flash drive.  read the readme.txt inside the archive.

The tool includes several bat, com and exe files and readme.txt doesn't tell me which one I have to run. Do you know?

Looked in the batch files and tried the ones that seemed to be valid. I got rid on the '...not in commited state part' of the error message, but I can't see that this tool will let me set a new serial number.

Enter new serial, can't help you there.  Do you need to enter one? The error did go away or you still having a error?

The first error message is gone, but it still reports 'invalid serial number' during POST. Looking in BIOS I can see that the serial number field is empty, but I can't submit one from there. According to another forum I should be able to do this using HP SetConfig Utility.

But hey, I got rid of the most annoying one so thank you :)
Will leave this open for a couple of days, hoping someone has the utility laying around somewhere.

Found a copy of HP SetConfig 1.38, which did the trick fixing the serial number issue as well

I'll leave it there for a few days.

You will still need to make a bootable device (USB, Floppy, CD) and place the extracted file there. The rest is self explanatory
