Needing tips for applying solder to connectors of a Averatec 3200 laptop DC recharge port
Hi Everyone;
In an attempt to troubleshooting a loose DC port problem, I am trying to resolder the 3 soldering joints on the back of a circuit board housing the DC port itself. I am not sure I am doing it right because the solder applied is coming out looking like blobs. With that in mind, I am wondering what I can do to make my soldering job be neater. For instance, should I consider purchasing a soldering kit with adjustable or different size tips? The soldering gun I have only has one size tip. And, secondly, can I perhaps use a Dremmel tool with a fine grinding tip on the end and file down the blobs? I am cautious because I don't want to do anything risky which might damage the circuit board itself.
Any tips regarding how to fine tune the solder will be appreciated.
Thank you
George

Hi
What exactly is flux? Is it a compound which can be purchased online? And, secondly, is there a link or place I can purchase a complete soldering kit which has different size soldering tips alond with a desoldering pump gun?
Thanks

Hi Everyone;
Thanks so much for the insightful tips along with the starter soldering kit. I did learn a great deal here from this post. I am pretty sure I will be ordering the kit to get to beginner experience with soldering techniques.

FYI on the gas soldering kits if you get one.
There is a vented section near the tip that will exhaust the burned gas and is very hot. You must be aware that this exhaust port should be pointed away from the PCB board when soldering as to not introduce the extra hot exhaust to the PCB. Trust me, I've done it myself and it can ruin a board.

Thank you for the tips. Incidently, can you tell me more about the crocodile clips? Where can I purchase them online? Sounds like they would come in handy.
Just one more thing, where can I get a soldering gun with fine tip? The tip I have on this one works ok, but, I would like to fine a soldering gun with different size tips for the finer tuned soldering projects.
Thanks
George
