Most laptops have status lights inside or next to the rj45 jack.  If you plug your network cord in and don't see any lights - then there is some sort of electrical connection problem - either with the jack on the laptop, the network cord or the router.

If your laptop does not have lights next to the jack - then when you plug the laptop into your router, does the router status light for the jack on the router light up?  If not, then again you have an electrical issue with the jack or the cord.

If you know you have a good cord, and you don't get status lights on either the laptop or the router - then it is likely that the lan jack on your laptop is dead.

Good luck.

my rj45 jack doesn't have a light and i tried already to check in the router, and you are correct i didn't get any status light, and i'm sure that my cable are in good shape, so i need to replace my RJ45 jack?, or is there something i can do?

Connect your laptop up to another known good network connection... can you connect? if yes, then it is your jack, cable(s), port on the switch. If no, then you have some issues with the specific machine and/or TCP/IP configuration. Try configuring a static IP address... can you then get out?

by: CzherPosted on 2009-07-28 at 21:54:33ID: 24967274

i already tried it also, to connect with a good network, but unfortunately there is no reaction, i tried also to put an static IP adress and still the same (no reaction), can you help me to do the TCP/IP configuration, becaus i'm not that familiar to networking.

Thanks

It sounds like the lan jack has the problem.

If this is in an office environment where multiple jacks go to a wiring closet, there could be mutiple problems including...
1. damaged cable in the walls
2. damaged wall jack or improper connection of jack to cable in the wall
3. The other end isnt connected to any network equipment
4. the network administrator has disabled this network port on purpose

by: automationstationPosted on 2009-07-28 at 22:26:50ID: 24967357

I think his problem is machine specific and not network specific. He said he already tried a know good network connection. Once connected to the network, what does the properties of the network connection show?

by: CzherPosted on 2009-07-28 at 23:06:13ID: 24967477

even the cable is plugged, it is showing this message " The Network Cable is unplugged", i tried it in a good network connection, and still the sme message

Is your lan connection disabled in control panel / network connections?

by: CzherPosted on 2009-07-28 at 23:56:39ID: 24967649

the status is "Network Cable unplugged", even the cable is connected

by: Michael_IPosted on 2009-07-29 at 00:04:25ID: 24967689

Look at My Computer -> properties -> Devices
May be your network adapter is disabled.
If not - it's definitely cable problem.  Try to use another one if you have it.

by: CzherPosted on 2009-07-29 at 00:11:52ID: 24967722

it's enabled, and i tried several cables already connected to the network, but the message is always "the network cable is unplugged", do you think that my RJ45 jack has the problem and need to replaced?, but when i check the device status " this device is working properly", i tried also to uninstall and install, but again it is still not able to connect.

by: Michael_IPosted on 2009-07-29 at 00:19:47ID: 24967753

Oh... in that case I think you've got some phisical problem with RJ-45 port.
If device is working correctly, you used different cables (so this in not cable problem), you tried connect it to working connection.... so only rj45-port problem may cause this.

this sounds like a common problem, usually either the transmit or receive function of the onboard LAN port have failed, which does not show up on Device Manager or system diagnostics easily.  You will have to use either a USB or PCMCIA Ethernet card to try and resolve your issue, as the only other way would be to replace the motherboard.  i have had this many time son desktops and laptops, and obviously its easier to fix on a desktop.

If the unit is company property, your IT department/person should be fixing this, if it's yours and under warranty, your manufacturer should be replacing the board under warranty.  If it's out of warranty, then you need to purchase one of the two devices i mentioned or switch to wireless connectivity if you have it.  Again, you can buy wireless add-on cards/USB too.  Get yourself a good gigabit Ethernet card, and you can disable the dead LAN port in the BIOS so the system does not see it.

so there is no other way to fix it, anyway i'll just buy a new laptop, to solve this problem, thank you very much for your big help for me to understand everything about my RJ45 jack.

Some laptops have LAN boards which can be replaced (plugged directly into the motherboard). No-one asked this guy what make/model of laptop he had - it might have been a relatively easy fix assuming that the LAN adapter was at fault.

I agree with shaunadem.  You can by a type 2 PC card (network adapter) to use alternatively in your laptop and then disable the onboard network adapter via BIOS or Device Manager.   This is if you are adamant about using a hard-wired connection.  Something else to try is to connect another system using the same network cord/connection you were using to ensure there is nothing wrong with the port you are connecting to as part of process of elimination for troubleshooting.

If you want to use wireless, then go with a USB wireless device.

******You may want to check these options out before buying a new laptop.********

Hi again
The Lan board i refer to is the actual "onboard" RJ45 connector on the laptop motherboard. With some make/models the boards can actually be removed and replaced if you take the laptop apart.
