Question

Is there an indicator for caps lock in Dell Studio XPS 1640 or Dell Studio 1555 and how to type ASCII codes

Asked by: GeekTechLab

Hello,

I am interested in getting a Laptop computer, I was thinking about the Dell Studio 15 (1555) or a Dell Studio XPS 1640. But I have some doubts. I´m not sure if someone who already have one of these systems can help me..

Is there an indicator for CAPS LOCKS in those systems?  I've heard some rumors that the Studio XPS 1640 with backlit keyboard, has the indicator in the key itself, the ilumination changes when is activated or something like that, but I'm not sure if this is correct. The same rumors I've heard about Studio 1555, can someone confirm this? :(   I´m aware that in the Studio 1555 is controlled by Quickset when you´re in windows, but what about outside of Windows, if I start in MS-DOS? is there any indicator that tells me the system has caps lock activated? Is there a video showing the backlit functionality for the caps lock, if it´s possible, I would love to see it.

And the other question is about the ASCII codes, in previous laptops we had the numpad keys and we could use FN + ALT and the numpad key to type an ascii character, how can I accomplish this in these two models? because they don´t have the numpad anymore..

I would be very grateful if someone could clarify these doubts for me, thanks!

Is there an indicator for CAPS LOCKS in those systems?

Yes, I'm very sure the Studio 15 has a caps lock light. It's on the left side of the keyboard, directly left of the caps lock key. I couldn't find any pictures that show it  on though, but it does and I've seen this model of laptop a number of times before. I don't recall ever *noticing* the LED on, but I've seen it in person and it is definitely there.

Here is the caveat though: Perhaps the 1555 is different the other Studio 15s I've seen? Hmmm. I certainly hope they wouldn't make such a huge change in the same series, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I´m aware that in the Studio 1555 is controlled by Quickset when you´re in windows, but what about outside of Windows, if I start in MS-DOS? is there any indicator that tells me the system has caps lock activated?

Quickset does a number of things, but it only shows a graphical indicator on your screen (windows desktop). It doesn't actually control any lights etc. on the keyboard itself and those LEDs should work without quickset.

And the other question is about the ASCII codes, in previous laptops we had the numpad keys and we could use FN + ALT and the numpad key to type an ascii character, how can I accomplish this in these two models? because they don´t have the numpad anymore..

According to the photo I linked above included in this review forthe Studio 15, it does have a numlock button. The keyboard clearlyshows secondary, blue numbers on the right section of the keyboard. This means it can do the 'numpad' thing for sure.

Without using the numlock, you should also be able to just hold FN instead (FN will give you access to any secondary functions on keys with blue text). For what it is worth, there's also an LED right above the numlock key.

If you don't  have access to the numlock numbers though, you can't do it. Although, you could buy  a USB numpad (mentioned above) or settle with using Start > Run > charmap.exe

If you just needed accents however, you may be able to get away with manipulating some accessibility settings with Chinese unicode. I can't remember what was involved, but I've seen it out there on the net.

I can't answer anything about the Studio XPS 1640 and the rest of my information is based on what I know of the Studio 15 (may not be  the 1555 specifically), but hopefully that helps reinforce any information you may have seen. Maybe a 1555 owner can jump in here. I hope so. :-)

Hello,

Thanks for the information, however there are many Dell Studio 15, including 1555, 1535, 1440, 1435 and many others, the Dell Studio 1555 is very different from previous Studio models, you can take a look at the keyboard of this model here:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I5I-4VaU9G0/Sk77DZqE0PI/AAAAAAAAAFM/pSnJSZegLb0/s1600-h/PIC_0049.JPG

As you can see in the picture, there is no noticeable caps lock indicator, there's no key for num lock and the numbers that represent the numpad in some keys is not there. This is why I would like to know how to accomplish typing ASCII codes without the numpad, or if it´s there, even though it is not marked?  or is it possible to use the numbers at the top of the keyboard?

I know that if I use an external keyboard, I should be able to have these features, but that is not the point, I´m also aware that Quickset works at OS level, and it does not control any led because it´s sofware based after all.

What I would like to know is, if there is a way to have these indicators without depending on something external, a sofware, or additional hardware. And also about the back lit keyboard, if I press caps lock, does the illumination changes, to indicated that is selected, or this doesn´t work this way?  those are the things I'd like to know

Well, the one thing I can tell you for sure is that you do not need a number pad as long as you have the blue numbering on the keys and FN + ALT keys...  However, it would appear your image of the 1555 keyboard doesn't have these.

You absolutely have to use numpad keys. Regular number keys can't be substituted.

So by the looks of it, you cannot do ASCII with this keyboard. You'd have to settle for Start > Run > charmap.exe or an external solution. :-(

I am familiar with the FN + Alt keys functions, however, the Studio 1555 keyboard doesn't have the common blue numbering on the keys, that is why I don't know how to use ASCII code in this keyboard and I don't want an external solution like a keypad.

Also I would like to know how the backlit keyboard works since I would like to be notified when the capslock key is pressed/activated.

It seems that I will need to wait for a better keyboard design.

Since nobody provided me more info about this system, I kept researching and confirmed that there is no Caps Lock indicator outside Windows, even if the system is bought with a backlit keyboard. There is no numpad and there is no way to use ASCII code. I ordered my Studio 1555 since it seems that those features are not going to be included in the coming notebooks. I will have to get used to live w/o those features... :'(
