Question

No sound on Satellite A40

Asked by: JohnnyCanuck

I just did a fresh install of XP Home SP3 on a Toshiba Satellite A40.  I have installed ALL of the drivers except the sound which will not install.  The error I am getting is "the required section not found in the .inf".  These drivers are from the Toshiba Canada site and they are for the correct model (PSA40C-0F1LR).  Any suggestions.

it can be the sound section is bad
you can test it by running from this live Knoppix cd - you should hear the welcome sound :

for most laptops, this means a new mobo, or apcmcia card : http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/12/22/review_creative_audigy_2_zs/

edbedb, the driver for this machine is sa40bxsn.exe as listed on Toshiba Canada's site, but I'll give your driver a try today.

nobus, already tried the Knoppix CD and the sound works in Linux.

xtreminator, already tried the manual install, it begins to load the driver then it throws the "the required section not found in the .inf" error.

The solution to this problem is somewhat strange.  The sound driver will not install on a machine with SP2 or SP3 installed.  I don't know if it will install on a machine with SP1a or not as I didn't have a disk with SP1a lying around.  At any rate I did a fresh install of XP Home with NO service packs and the driver installed and the sound worked.  The sound continued to work through the installation of SP2 and SP3 (I had to install SP2 first because you can't install SP3 without at least having SP1 installed).  The machine is fully updated now and the sound continues to work.  The sound driver is dated 3/9/2004.  I'm sorry to have to close this question without awarding points.
