"lcds not working but fans spinning" This is the way the customers would describe a fault to you, but in reality the issue could be anything, from faulty ram, video card(motherboard), if you are lucky the hdd or corrupted operating system. It would be an lcd fault if they can hear the computer loading to windows, but cant see it on the screen. So I guess you would have to ask a lot of questions, before you decide to go ahead.
From my experience fan spinning and nothing on screen is in most cases a boot issue. You can very easily determine if it is the screen/iverter, by either asking them if it is loading to BIOS, or if they hear the windows sound, without even connecting to an external screen.
Replacing the inverter is easy, but for some models laptops to open up the lcd you need to remove it from the base and that would involve disassembling the whole laptop if the cables are routed around the motherboard, and it is not an easy task if you dont know what you are doing. Once you can open the LCD screen, replacing the inverter is as easy as to unplug it and just plug the new one.

the inverter board is usually in the lid beside the lcd on the widest side its usually a 20-30 min fix if your used to it.
Its easy to identifying a video problem as if the laptop work on an external monitor then the motherboard is ok if it doesn't its a motherboard fault with the video chipset so if the laptop screen isn't working plug in an external monitor to test the problem usually is the lcd itself as they are easy to break
