I agree with you on everything. I have been trying to tell my friend to buy a lenovo for the longest time, I think after this she will finally listen. As I am a tech and certified myself I would definitely be confident enough to open it up but it's not worth it to me. Before I asked my question I had already called to let her know that I have confirmed that its a GPU issue (once reading your response to the other post) and with it being soldered onto the board we might as well forget about it. Great thanks for the fast reply your awesome! Yup you would never catch me buying one of those HP Laptops lol.

the main issue with the GPU's was the fitting of the heat-sink to the chassis, and when the system gets very hot, the heat-sink gets pulled AWAY from the GPU, which in turn damages/strains the pin connections, and results in the dead screen you see -- seeing the same effect on an external screen shows that its not an LCD or inverter issue, but a graphics chipset issue.
if HP do not honour the replacement of the GPU issue, not much else you can do, some have suggested on other forums of baking the board & GPU in an oven to loosen the solder to allow re-alignment and fixing of the heat-sink issue and proper silver thermal paste, but you need to be very confident taking apart a laptop (and have no screws left over at the end!!). perhaps your house insurance might cover an independent repair.
I wouldn't buy another HP laptop again, vote with your money, buy a Lenovo or Toshiba next time around.
