Personnally I use a 2.5 " HDD case. I connect It in USB and access it like any other external Hard drive. just take care to the format : IDE or SATA depending on your hard drive.

If it is a newer laptop (within the last 3 years), then the laptop most likely uses a SATA drive. If this is the case, you can just take the drive out of the laptop and connect it to a desktop computer's motherboard using one of the SATA controllers.
If it is an older laptop, (more than 3 years old), then the laptop most likely uses an IDE drive, and the 2.5" IDE interface is different from the standard desktop 3.5" IDE interface, so you'll need to get an adapter like the one TheNautican linked to.

not a problem. We use something like this:http://www.newegg.com /Product/P roduct.asp x? Item=N82 E168122320 02 to hook up the drive to our repair system. Then, access the now added drive letter.
