acer laptop has me stumped!

I have an acer 5315-2698 laptop that will not allow me to install an OS no matter what i do. My friend gave me this thing and asked me to fix it when it wouldn't boot anymore. I've tried installing both XP and Vista. When i try to install XP, I get the following when XP is loading its files to start the install:
"An unexpected error (32769) has occurred on line 5137 in D:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\setup. Press any key to continue" and of course pressing any key does nothing.

When i try Vista, right after i accept the license agreement, i get a screen that displays the hard disk info with an error msg:
"This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." and it is enabled.

I've verified using another laptop that the hard-drive and RAM is good, and now I'm totally stumped. Any ideas??
