My laptop turns on then cuts back off

If I let my laptop sit for longer then an hour it turns on and windows comes up but then it cuts off and if I try to turn on the computer right away the power light starts flashing and doesn't come on and I have to let it sit for another while so it  turn on again. My hardrive crashed so I'm using another working hardrive.
