very faint sound coming from asus LK3400-H notebook...

I have the following problem with my Asus L3400H notebook:
 
Sound is very faint. I can hear music when I play it coming out of the speakers, but really soft (same with startup sound etc.etc.) . All volume bars are wide open in the system panel and in the mediaplayer. What can be the problem? Sound playback device = SiS 7012 Wave.

System is windows XP servicepack 1. It is a completely clean install with all the drivers from the asus cd-rom and a fresh windows XP on it.

It does not matter wether sound is played from cd or from disk, it is far too soft from every source.

I really have no clue.

Please dont take this the wrong way, but have you tried any of the harware volume controls, it can be very confusing, my laptop has a dedicated volume switch and also Fn+ Page up and Page down adjust the volume controls outwith the OS environment, Take a good look at your keyboard, there is often a switch hidden there. I took me ages to work out which is controled by what. In the end I opened up all the dedicated switches to max and now control the volume by aplication volume sliders only and the volume control in the control panel. Much less confusing.
