Dell Latitude C600 Crashed During Windows XP Patch and Won't Reboot

I have a Dell Latitude which we were changing over from Windows 98 to Windows XP Pro.  I booted the cpu with an XP Professional disk in the CD Drive.  I deleted the partition, created a new one with NTFS and then completed the installation. This looked good and I could boot with no issues.  I placed a CD in the drive with basic Windows XP patches to prevent Slammer, etc.  The CD was created from files on our protected network and was never used in another computer.  We are behind a firewall, protected with Cheyenne's enterprise version of eTrust which is updated daily.  The files used were, KB823182-x86-enu.exe, KB823980-x86-enu.exe, KB24105-x86-enu.exe, KB824141-x86-enu.exe, KB824146-x86-enu.exe, KB825119-x86-enu.exe and KB828035-x86-enu.exe.  It crashed during 141.  The computer was doing the install of the patch.  Then a screen indicating a crash appeared for just a couple of seconds and disappeared.  Nothing came on the screen after that.  I then rebooted the laptop, placed the cmos password and continued.  The screen blanked; hard drive activity ceased and that was the end of it.

I have tried to get to safe mode also.  I can press F8 and get to the menu for safe mode.  After I choose safe mode, the screen listing the files running stops at mutli(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\AppPatch\drvmain.sdb and will not go any further.  Files displayed to this point are: ntoskrnl.exe, hal.dll, kdcom.dll, bootvid.dll, system, c_1252.nls, c_437.nls, L-intl.nl and vgaoem.fon.

I have also tried "last known good config" and it stops without even trying to complete the "graph bar" at the bottom of the screen.

I will end up calling Dell unless I find an alternative solution before then.

Thank you for your consideration.

The KB...141 corrupted and caused the issue.  I chose to reapply the patch.  That went well and then continued with the rest of the update without issue.

Thanks.  Sorry about the delay in closing this one.
