Speakers work, headphones don't.

I can listen to the music using speakers. There is no sound if I connect headphones to the laptop. Any ideas how to fix it? Thanks.

The headphone jack on your notbook is probably broken. If it is new, get a warranty replacement, if it is out of warranty, and you have the technical nerves to take appart a laptop (Is usually not too easy), you can open up the case and check the jack, if it is soldered correctly to the mainboard, or you could then replace it. These jacks usually have a small switch inside, which when a jack is inserted, will turn off the internal speakers open the circuitry so that sound is routed to the jack. This switch might be broken. When you connect the headphones, do the internal speakers turn off?
why don't o get an answer??

I am trying to connect the headphones to Dell Latitude laptop with built-in speakers. Built-in speakers work. When I connect the headphones, the internal speakers do turn off. I tested headphones with CD player and another laptop computer Dell Inspiron.

Can it be a software issue, for example Windows XP settings?
No. The internal and external speaker output are the same.

There are settings under Volume Control --> Otions --> Properties that had to be changed (unmute).
