Question

"USB Device Not Recognized" Errors, Errant USB Port Behavior on Dell 700m XP Pro SP2

Asked by: ronaldopn

This is an extremely difficult one to troubleshoot, I believe. In fact, I'm willing to bet this is the question of death. I've done a lot, tried a lot, and I'm beginning to think my USB ports are just shot for good.

Here is the history:

1) I bought a Samsung mp3 player at Radio Shack (YP-F1 XB), thinking I would save $ over an iPod (plus this had a radio)
2) Excited, I brought it home, unwrapped, and plugged it into one of my USB ports
3) The mp3 player was initially detected as a Mass Storage Device, and XP ran its default window which prompts the user how you'd like to interact with the new USB Mass Storage Device.
4) Later, while the mp3 player was still plugged, I popped in the Samsung CD which installs the Music Management software and the USB driver.

5) That's when things started to go haywire.

6) The mp3 player, after having installed the driver for it, suddenly was undetectable. I kept receiving "USB Device Not Recognized" popup windows from the bottom right toolbar.
7) This operation apparently screwed up both my USB ports somehow, because when I tried to plug in my printer, external hard drive, and blackberry, they were all "USB Device Not Recognized". On both ports.

8) That's when I called Dell Support.

---DELL DIAGNOSES MISADVENTURES BEGIN

9) Dell Support Round 1 - Support call had me verify that the 4 separate devices I was trying to connect weren't faulty. Fine. I verified that the printer, blackberry, and external drive all worked since I plugged them into another computer I have. Then, he had me check to see if there were any "yellow question marks" when viewing any of the items under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" of the Device Manager. There were none. In fact, whenever I connected a device, a new item went underneath it "Unknown Device", which, when you clicked on its Properties, showed that "No drivers are installed for this device". So the guy had me pull our my Dell utilities CDs and find the one to reinstall USB drivers - a section titled something like Notebook Utilities on the CD. So I did, and as I needed to restart, and I was on support chat, I lost my support guy.

10) Dell Support Round 2 - So, after restarting, that didn't work. I went on Dell chat support again, and after waiting 20 minutes, finally got someone. This time, after explaining my situation, they wanted me to perform a "System Restore" (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools). Fine. He explained that it would restore the entire system to a previous state in the past. Okay, that made good sense. So I went in there and specified to have my system restored to a few hours back, just before I installed the mp3 player. Restart needed, lost rep again.

11) Dell Support Round 3 - After restarting, that didn't work. I was really starting to get pissed now. So I logged unto Dell chat support again, and when I got someone (after 40 mins), I explained my current situation, and they stepped thru the same scripted recommendations, which I told him I already performed. He finally gave me an actual Dell Support number to call, 1-866-497-2661. His final recommendation, and he said that this would 100% work, was to do a System Restore. I told him I already tried that, and ended that session.

12) Dell Support Round 4 - 2am in the morning. I called the Dell support people using the hard-to-find number I was given. Was put on hold, patched thru to one person, who patched me unto another person in Canada. This person was actually pretty helpful. We tried a lot of different things:
- We went into BIOS, and she had me have CAPS, Num, and Scroll Locks on. Then she gave me this wierd key combo to strike - Alt+E, Alt+F, and Alt+B. I heard beeps every time I did one set. This, she explained, ran activities in the background which reset some utilities to factory settings.
- We went into each of the "USB Root Hub" USB items via Device Manager, and went Properties -> Power Management tab -> uncheck the "Allow computer to turn of device to save power".
- We manually uninstalled all USB items from the Device Manager, then reinstalled with the Dell Utility CD I had.
- We did a System Restore to a previous point 2 WEEKS prior.

After all that, at around 4am, she asked me "Do you have anything important on your laptop?" "Oh, crap...." I knew what that meant.

She suggested a full OS reinstall - clean install.

---DELL DIAGNOSES MISADVENTURES END

13) After a few hours backing up my files unto several CDs (Arbanak - wish I knew about that network utility), I was ready. But I decided to sleep first.

14) Next day, while at work, I began the OS clean reinstall. XP Pro SP2 (I have the Dell reinstallation CD).

15) I found some pretty good instructions on the Dell support site to step me through this. Not to hard. Booted from disc, deleted existing partition, created new partition to install OS on.

16) After the install of XP, I didn't have any internet connections, so I couldn't update XP. I decided instead to reinstall the Dell drivers for my laptop. So I installed the drivers off my CD one at a time (though I did not know which specifically I needed to install, and in what sequence...there was a recommended path of Utilities & Drivers, Chipset, Video, Audio, Network drivers. Then I installed the other application drivers (for printer, etc)

17) Anyway, after everything I did, I was able to get the following results:

TOP usb port - mouse OK, external drive NOT RECOGNIZED, printer NOT RECOGNIZED, mp3 player NOT RECOGNIZED
BOTTOM usb port  - mouse OK, external drive OK, printer OK, mp3 player NOT RECOGNIZED

See? Basically errant, inconsistent behavior.

I'm hoping this forum/thread can shed some light here....

MY CURRENT STATUS:
---------------------------
After the above, I actually tried an XP Repair Install, which also didn't work. I'm going to try a clean OS install again. I may have made a mistake with installing the Dell drivers, sequence of it? Not sure...

QUESTIONS FOR ALL:
-------------------------
1) After a clean OS reinstall, does anyone know which drivers exactly are needed for install on a Dell 700m, and in what sequence?
2) Will purchasing the USB Hub Card do the trick?
3) Do you know what name the port on top is (Port 0?) versus the port on the bottom? Just trying to map exactly which of the 4 "Intel USB..." items and 4 "USB Root" items map to the port on top, which map to the port on the bottom.
4) When I get a "USB Device Not Recognized" and click on the balloon, how come under the USB Root, there are 5 ports listed? That's just doesnt make sense.

Nothing is ever easy.

Interesting saga with Dell.   Since you've got a full backup at the moment (I presume), I would first try to use the PC Restore feature - if your laptop includes it.

Be SURE you're backed up here -- this will destroy all data on the laptop.

Restart the laptop, and while the www.dell.com is displayed at the top of the screen (you have a very short time to do this) press <Ctrl><F11>

Do you get another page with the option to restore?

If so, choose Restore, and then Confirm it.   In about ten minutes your laptop should be exactly as it was when you received it from the factory.

If that works okay; then install the CD for your MP3 player -- do this BEFORE you ever plug it in.   THEN plug in the player.

Post back with how this all works.

IF the USB ports still don't work after the complete restore above, then you may want to order an add-in card with USB ports -- just to confirm whether this is a USB port issue, or something more significant.   These are pretty inexpensive these days, and could be useful in troubleshooting this issue.   For example:

Garycase,

Actually, I forgot to mention that Dell also had me try that - the PC Restore Feature, but I never got it to work. After pressing <ctrl><f11>, nothing ever popped up. Two things I did previously to the laptop probably affected this:

1) Originally, this laptop came from Dell with XP Home. Person I bought it from (eBay) installed XP Pro over it.

2) I believe the PC Restore feaure is a product of....I wanna say Symantec? Norton? One of those utilities guys. I think I read that somewhere, but you can keep me honest. Anyway, I uninstalled all of the non-TrendMicro, sounded-likepreloaded-virus-protection software.

The again, I also have slow fingers. I'll try the PC Restore route out and see if I can do that.
If not, I'll probably do a clean reinstall again...

Would you happen to know the exact drivers needed to install after a clean OS install, and the sequence of them? I think that may have something to do withit as well.

by: garycasePosted on 2005-12-06 at 23:23:35ID: 15434274

If you do a clean OS install you should do the following:

(1)  Install XP

(2)  Update it to SP2 if it wasn't done from an SP2 CD

(3)  Install the chipset drivers

(4)  Install the ethernet drivers

(5)  Install the sound card drivers

(6)  Install the video card drivers

1-3 should be done in that order; 4-6 can be done in any order.

Garycase,

Comments on recommended path below -

(3)  Install the chipset drivers

*** I have 2 chipset drivers listed:
a) Intel Mobile Chipset REV A06, and
b) Texas Instruments PCI7420 Flash Memory/SD Reader REV A00

Q1: should I install both in that order?

(4)  Install the ethernet drivers

*** I don't see any "Ethernet Drivers" group per se in the CD. Did you mean "Network Drivers"? There I have:
a) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller REV A05
b) Dell Wireless 1350 (802.11b/g) WLAN miniPCI Card Rev A03 (3 of same ones actually...one for use in Japan, one for use in US, one for use in any other country not US and Japan)
c) Intel (R) ProWireless 2100 LAN miniPCI Adapter Rev A13
d) Intel (R) ProWireless 2200BG Network Connection Rev A00

Q2: which of these should I install? all of them? Or only a subset?

Q3: Finally, should I install the "Dell Notebook System Software Rev A15"? It doesn't list it in the "Drivers" page, but the description says it

"provides critical updates for your operating system...install NSS to gain support for...Intel Pentium M processors, CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD drives...and USB devices"

if so, when in sequence?

by: garycasePosted on 2005-12-07 at 10:00:02ID: 15438190

Chipset drives => drivers for your motherboard's chipset.   That would be the Intel Mobile Chipset.   The TI driver you listed is for your card reader -- you can install those later.

Ethernet = Network.  Install the Broadcom (that's the wired connector).   You should only install the wireless one that's actually needed with your laptop -- do you have anything that shows which one that is?  In any event you can install them later.

Up to you whether to install the Dell updates.   Personally, I'd just use Windows Update to get all of the updates for the OS.   But the Dell "Rev A15" updates are probably harmless.  And if you do them, do them after the first three steps.

by: ronaldopnPosted on 2005-12-07 at 22:56:44ID: 15442687

Well, clean install happened. I follwed the instructions for driver install sequence as well (thanks garycase).

After all that, I am able to plug in ALL devices successfully on BOTH ports, EXCEPT USB Storage type devices. So, my Seagate external drive remains an undetectable device. But, my corded and wireless mice now work, and my printer works, and will be checking on my Blackberry if that works.

What gets me is that USB Mass Storage devices are supposed to be supported with Xp Pro SP2.

by: ronaldopnPosted on 2005-12-08 at 16:02:19ID: 15449447

Quick Summary:
-------------------
1. After reinstalling XP Pro with SP2 (one CD from Dell)...

2. After reinstalling relevant Dell drivers...

3. I find that all my USB devices work EXCEPT USB Mass Storage Devices (Seagate 80GB external hard drive). It becomes listed in Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > Unknown Device

Update:
---------
1. After reading around a bunch of forums, there seems to be a quick fix: to disable the "Intel .... USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller".

2. Upon disabling, and then connecting my Seagate external drive, XP locates it. However, I get a balloon message saying that "This device can perform faster if you connect it to a High Speed USB 2.0 port".

3. Both my ports are USB 2.0 ports, however!

4. So, it seems that I have isolated the problem to either XP or "Intel .... USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller". The communication between it and XP is simply not in sync.

5. I have tried to uninstall the "Intel .... USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller", but after I do, and it dissapears from the Device Manager, upon restart, I think XP just automagically installs it again, because when I return to the Device Manager, it's there again!

Questions:
------------
1. Does anyones have any other ideas looming around? I'm going to buy a USB card to see if that will work as another temporary hack fix. Then, to fix my PC, maybe the GeekSquad....but I would really love to try and fix this here. I think it's close.

If the system is working perfectly with the USB 2.0 controller disabled you either have a corrupted USB driver, or defective ports, or a USB power issue (the external devices are drawing too much power; which probably means the motherboard is not providing the power it's supposed to).   You can try disabling the 2.0 controller -- NOT uninstalling it.  XP will "honor" that -- whereas if you uninstall it then it's detected and reinstalled at bootup.

If that works, then I'd buy a PCI USB card (as I suggested a good bit earlier) and see if the 2.0 ports on it will work okay.

USB issues can, as you've discovered, be very tricky to isolate -- there are a large number of variables at play, and they can interact in unexpected ways.

if you have warranty left, you can best have a replacement

by: garycasePosted on 2005-12-09 at 07:13:24ID: 15452938

Depends on the BIOS.  Look carefully through the advanced options in the BIOS to see what options you have vis-a-vis the USB ports.   You can try "toggling" any options -- if they're enabled, disable them; if they're disabled, enable them -- to see if that changes the behavior.   Also, if there's a "Plug 'n Play" OS option, be sure it's enabled/checked/etc. to XP isn't "fighting" the BIOS for device control.

There's no way to change what options you'll get in the BIOS.   Sometimes a BIOS update will add additional features/options, but more often than not they're just bug fixes or stability improvements.

I do not know of any way to disable the automatic driver loading -- when XP detects a "new" device (anything it doesn't already have drivers for) it will look for drivers, and if it finds them will install them.   You can, after it boots up, go to Device Manager and choose the "Update Driver" option => and then point it to the driver you want to use.   You MAY (I haven't tried this -- and am going to be gone the rest of the evening so don't have time to now) be able to disable the "Plug and Play" service (use MSCONFIG and disable this in the list of services) and stop the automatic configuration.  (Start - Run - MSCONFIG)

I had this same problem and read this thread to find a solution. When drawing power was mentioned I was sure that was the answer. Instead of making changes to the bios I bought a POWERED USB HUB and plugged my printer and scanner into that. Now when I plug in my USB flash drive I no longer get the USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED error! Problem Solved!!
