First get all the driver updates for your notebook from gateway and install them. Also run windowsupdate and install all updates and servicepacks. Then stert regedit and look for the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
Right click in the upper and lower filter entries in these keys and press delete. Reboot and check if it is OK now.

was this working before?
what you may want to do is boot into SAFE MODE, then go to the DEVICE MANAGER and remove and instances of DVD/CD anything.. restart your machine and report back.
